Had the last couple days off work so I got to try out some new cocktails. Most of them were unimpressive, but one of them was surprisingly fantastic; it convinced my non-whiskey drinking friend he liked whiskey. It's called The Revolver, courtesy of Jeffrey Morgenthaler's Bar Book (which I highly recommend for anyone interested in learning the technique behind great cocktails):

2 ounces dry, spicy bourbon (although I used Bulleit Rye and it worked great)
1/2 ounce coffee liqueur (Kahlua)
2 dashes orange bitters (he includes a recipe for homemade orange bitters, but I just used Regan's)

Stir with ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish with a flamed orange twist. It's an odd drink, in that it doesn't taste like the sum of its parts. No one guessed it had Kahlua, or whiskey for that matter. The nose is all orange, and the flavor has a light coffee sweetness, but it's not cloying. It's just a delightful cocktail all around.

I have always wanted to try mead. What is a good brand name that is available at a local liquor store?

I got it for my daughter to make something for thanksgiving, but it never happened. Very sweet, but tastes kind of good. This'll be the last bottle I get, unless I find a good recipe to use it; maybe on ice cream. Drinking too much of this could cause vagina growth I think, but I suppose that would give me something to play with :^D

Dunno how it compares to other brands, and it's a little spendy at $35, but it tastes great, and comes in a cool stoneware bottle.

I have a habit of shitting on IPAs around here, because that dominates this market and finding other options generally means going to a specialty store.

Anyway, I picked this up at Safeway last night and yeah, lack of other options, I went with the possibly most-tolerable overhopped beer, because I still trust Sierra.

This is surprisingly delicious. It starts with a sharp, strong, piney-hop burst (that christmas tree/weed taste of yumminess), then vanishes after a few seconds. You then get a solid lager taste. No hoppy aftertaste that lingers for the rest of the night.

It's quite impressive.

I swear, Sierra just can do no wrong. Even though all of their beers have a very hoppy character, they remain as traditional to each style as they can, within their own goal of hoppy character. the porters and stouts are always very malty and heavy, for example. Of all the expanded macro (previous popular microbrews), Sierra seems to be the only one that retains it's quality to this day.

More recent victims have been RedHook (making pisswater for nearly 10 years now. so sad), and I feel New Belgium is going that way. You can see it in their "net-styled 2.0" pacakging, and the fact that they are rolling out IPAs in all types of styles--something they never used to do.

Last night I went to a small gathering at a house belonging to my wife's friend's boyfriend, and it turns out he has a pretty good whiskey collection. Talisker, Booker's, Yamazaki... not bad stuff at all. But I'd tried all those already, so I decided to have some of his bottom shelf Ancient Age. And for a $12 bourbon, that stuff is not bad at all. Never thought I'd see the day when I'd choose mixer whiskey over Booker's or a fine single malt, but you gotta try new things. For a bargain mixing bourbon, it's good stuff.

If you've never had Old Forester, try it. It's fairly cheap, and tasty. I may have that, or some Arbeg. I'm leaning towards the Ardbeg. It goes well with rainy weather.

My day got dicked up cause of the (freezing)rain. I wanted to go to Wegmans, and I always go early to avoid crowds. The roads were icy as shit. As I was preparing to go down a steep hill to the highway, a guy was backing up. When he got turned around, he told me someone was waving him off. People were sliding down the hill, and out on the highway. I went back home, and waited a couple hours. I went out again taking a different route(the highway), but traffic was stopped leading up to the hill of despair. So I turned around, and here I am. Fuck it. There's nothing I really need, but I wanted to do some shopping today :^/

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban port finished single malt Scotch. I'm not much of a Scotch drinker, more out of frugality than any dislike of fine whisky. This stuff, while not as complex as a peat monster like Lagavulin, is absolutely delicious. It tastes like exactly what it is; a fine single malt aged in bourbon barrels that spent a couple years finishing in ruby port casks. Sweet, light smokiness, it's like whisky candy, and a relative steal at $50.

On tap tonight is Orange Snail Brewer's "Rattle N Nemo" Irish Red Ale. A new craft brewery just opened up in my home town, so I thought I'd stop buy and try it. Not bad. It gets my seal of approval.

They're just selling in growlers right now. It's not available in the liquor store yet.
