Same as usual, got a glass of Gibson's 12 year aged whiskey Infront of me. On the rocks. And am listening to theory of a deadmans new album released today. Life is good. TGIF

Next is a braggot a buddy and I brewed up. : Brood Chambers first colab! A braggot of a Belgian quad and a buckwheat based mead. Both have an SG of 1.085-1.095, and will be fermented together. James Sties provided the Quad! In addition to the buckwheat from Ebee honey in Ohio, http://www.ebeehoney.com/ there are some jumbo raisins, prunes and dried black currants. The yeast is the house yeast for my favorite brewery, Unibroue. Wyeast Private Collection WY3864.

A primary fermentation was done down to 1.022 and then had a bit more honey added 2 pounds, after that a tertiary was done with a Dady yeast with the addition of 2.2 pounds more honey and some D90 Premium Dark Belgian Candi Syrup. After all was said and done it finished at 1.02. Wonderful dark grape notes with honey covering was the end result.

Before adding the honey and Dady I pulled a couple bottles. I'm drinking one of them tonight. HOLY FUCK!!! This it some great shit. Its full of malty goodness and a hint of honey, the middle had a neat cola note, the finish mimics a carbonated beverage even though it's a perfectly still braggot. Its only 8% or so and there are no leg, but damn is it good!

Old Overholt rye. I've been looking for a cheap replacement for Pikesville rye, which is no longer made. This has the right price($12.50), but it's a little firey for an 80 proof whiskey. All the right flavors are there, but it's a little wild. I'd pay $5-$10 more for a bottle that spent an extra year in the barrel. I think that would fix it up to be a great value spirit, if not budget. The search continues...

Bulleit? Too pricey?

Well, the other cheap rye is Beam, but I imagine you've already tried it.

Nothing within reason is too pricey, but I really liked Pikesville as a fill in when I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted. It was $13.50 a bottle, and imo compared favorably to something like Black Bush. In fact, it tasted kind of like a poor man's Irish. I guess I liked paying almost nothing, and getting something relatively fantastic. If I had known they were ceasing production, I'd have bought a couple cases. That would have lasted the rest of my life.

As far as the search goes, I guess I also enjoy looking for an unrecognized jewel. A $50 bottle of whiskey will almost always be good. It's not much of shock when you enjoy that. To find something under $20 that tastes great is a surprise, and a treasure.

Earlier in this thread I posted about Michter's rye, and I bitched a little about the price @ $45. I was being unreasonable. Whiskey just costs more now. I'm still half living in the 90s when I could get Dalmore 12yr for $25/bottle. To pay twice that for an American contract distilled whiskey; are you crazy?! :^D

The $25 ship sailed awhile ago I guess. I recently paid $150 for two bottles of Sagamore rye. Double wood, and moscato finished. Both are very good, especially the moscato, but it's not quite as special as a $14 bottle that tastes great.

Actually I haven't. I wonder how it compares with the Old Overholt? They come from the same distillery.
I haven't either, but I mean to. They're both 4 years old, so I don't imagine Beam could be a whole lot better, but it might be a bit more laid back than Old Overholt.

Revisiting the Old Overholt. My opinion is a little better tonight. Rather than firey, I think I'd describe it as "thin". That thinness makes the spirit flavor stand out more. I like it better, and I'd consider getting it again, but it's nothing spectacular. It would make a good sipping whiskey if you're broke. Drinkable neat, enjoyable even, but for another $10 you can get a decent scotch blend, or maybe an old brand bourbon.

Finishing my bottle of Cardhu. Problem is there was more left than I thought when I dumped it in the glass. I'm gonna half lit when I finish this. Hopefully it'll relax my back.

I need to put a visit to the distillery on my list of things to do. It's relatively close, and I've never been to a distillery before.

Bought it on a whim. I like it. Not really sure how it compares to other ports, but it scratches the right itch at $20. I'm enjoying it as well as the $60 bottle of Taylor Fladgate 20yr I bought last year. I might be able to discriminate if I had them side by side, but for something I only get every so often, I'm good with this.

More water. I want coffee, but it's a little too late at night. I have decaf, but I don't know if I'm that desperate.

There used to be some decafs that made my stomach hurt. I guess it's the way they were processed. I now don't use anything "unnatural". If I can't have the proper formula for whatever reason, I do without. In the case of coffee, I'd find a nice herb tea as a substitute. Luckily, coffee doesn't keep me awake, so I can drink it any time.

I'm trying to get my sleep schedule back to normal. Going to sleep at 2am is cool, but it makes it hard to get to work at a reasonable time. They're really cool about letting me work whenever, but I'd like to wake up at a reasonable time. I can easily drink a gallon of coffee per day. Fortunately my new office doesn't have a coffee maker, so I'd have to walk down to the cafeteria. Should help me cut back.

I need to get back to Portos. My last one was a Cockburn 20 year old Tawny but that was 5 or so years ago.
