Just completed a campaign of XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
Holy flaming dorritos Batman, there is a reason Firaxis is known as one of the best in the business for strategy games - this game is like digital crack. JUST ONE MORE TURN.
If you like Tactics games with some overworld strategy sprinkled in, this is your jam. If you like the emergent stories and gameplay that comes from chance based games, this is your stop. If you like becoming deeply attached to characters, then have them ripped away from you because you misjudged a situation, get on this ride.
The game's unforgiving difficulty, even on some of the lower difficulties, makes victory even more sweet when you manage to execute a perfect mission.
Somethings I learned early on:
- Build Satallites ASAP.
-Move everyone up to the blue line, then plan the next half of your turn.
-Keep your Squadsite/DoubleTap sniper alive at all costs.
-Dont be shy about using your items/explosives/secondary weapons.
From what I've read, the game's expansion Enemy Within rounds out the game rather well, so my next run will likely be after I pick up the expansion.
That was a hell of a journey, and my game ended on a very bitter sweet note with a Sniper and Support trooper that had made it through every mission sacrificing themselves to end the Alien threat. I expected the final cutscene to revive them but no, their bodies were right there...
I think a controller game is next on the docket. The DMC reboot (2013), Space Marine, Prince of Persia reboot, something like that.
