Hades.

About 4 hours / ~15 runs in and I'm starting to "get" it. Leave it to Supergiant to make a Rogue-lite that I actually enjoy, almost entirely thanks to the actual persistent progression.

Rogue-likes always lose me with their whole "one perfect run, but get ****ed by RNGesus" thing and the sense that I am never really making any meaningful progress from run to run. The persistent element has me strategizing runs: most of my early runs are purely collecting keys and darkness and gems and such.

Ironically the less I try the further I end up getting.
Game is slowly starting to leak into my day to day thoughts. Sometimes I catch myself visualizing my next run.

High On Life is .. well, it's bordelands.
I mean, you have constant chatter of comedic characters, and you walk around with a gun and mow down hordes of useless enemies. Instead of the loot, you get to do a bit of platforming, but it's the same spirit of borderlands. Zero effort, just shoot your way through the game and have fun listening to jokes.

Oh yeah, it's made by the guys who made Rick & Morty.

I really enjoyed the earlier seasons of Rick and Morty. Not caught up with season 4 or 5 but this game is on my radar. Watched a YouTuber play some of it and it looks pretty funny but I dunno if I would want to pay $60 for it.

I do see it's on game pass but I don't play enough games to justify signing up again for gamepass.

i can't believe i've already finished High On Life, and i spent about half the time listening to the Morty guy speak. SO. MUCH . DIALOGUE.

and very little gameplay.

.. dont get me wrong, the story is ok, but jesus, so little content for the money.

-Sounds like a classic $5 game. Enjoy once for what it is, put it away and forget about it forever.

World of Tanks. Haven't played for two years, but it's a lot more complicated now, and I've no idea where to start.

Got my first escape in Hades. Man it's a helluva ride, took me ~35 odd attempts for one escape, but I feel like I get the mechanics more now and the escapes should hopefully flow a bit more freely now.

I haven't stopped. It's basically the same, but a lot of new vehicles and maps to learn.
Get a mod pack. I use Aslains to get a minimap, where you can see view range etc. and I also have a mod that will show you penetration values at were you aim.

Which tanks do you have and how high tier do you play?

I almost completely 100% this game, but I just couldn't get the last skelly statue. The heat you need for that is just too much for me. I think I was able to clear at ~20 heat. Need 32 heat for the last statue...

Looking forward to Hades 2.

I'm definitely going for main story completion, dunno how much more I'm going to do after that. I really love the game's pick up and play style, really suits dad life well. 30 minutes here, an hour there, and you always feel like you're progressing even ever so slowly to the end.

I'm disappointed in Persona 5 Royal on PC.

This game is critically acclaimed and they call it a modern JRPG classic. I was ready to like it already and insta-bought it at PC launch date few months ago at $60. Fights feel like a damn puzzle since it's become so streamlined. I'm at the second temple or whatever and I can't bear to continue further. It's all same crap of finding weaknesses, use the spell they're weak against, pass the baton, repeat. Collecting summons also feel like a chore too.

The story is compelling enough. It made me feel young. But it's boring.

-I gave up on JRPGs decades ago. The Japanese just have an approach to game design and stories that just doesn't work for me on a fundamental level (or just doesn't translate).

There was a sort of elegant simplicity and whimsey to stuff like FF3 and Chrono Trigger that I loved as a kid but everytime I take a look at JRPGs it feels like the whole genre has regressed from that high mark.

I've been checking out numerous additional titles:

  • FF7R - Looks gorgeous on PC... for some reason, I can't get into it. Did I grow out of it? I loved JRPGs and loved Chrono Trigger, FF4, FF5, and FF7.
  • Batman Arkham City - This was critically acclaimed. I also can't get into it. The combat is near mindless... what am I missing? I'm about 2 hours in. Haven't gone back.
  • Control- Huge kudos for being different. I wish the pacing was somewhat faster. Combat could be better. I haven't been hooked yet, but looking forward to it.
  • Persona 5 Royal: Like I wrote in the post above, it feels like a damn puzzle. I bought this day 1 on PC release last year. Still haven't finished it.
  • Skul - 10/10 -Awesome indie rogue-like game. Tons of itemization, satisfying combat, and different strategies.
  • Deathloop - Only played a bit so far. It's okay. Not hooked yet. TBD.

Vampire Survivors right now. Such a weirdly chill game, and a great way to unwind after a long day. High stakes but low stress, absurdly simple gameplay, but an addictive non-committal 30 minute gameplay loop that really gives you that "one more turn" feeling.

Dirt cheap, tons of fun, will probably put 10 or so hours into it tops (I figure) before moving on to something else.

In the very late game of a fourth playthrough of Elden Ring, though my first on PC. I can never get tired of this game. Will probably jump back on PS5 next for God of War Ragnarok before coming back to PC on February 23rd when Like a Dragon Ishin comes out. Loved the PS4 version (龍が如く維新) but it'll be nice to play again with English localization so I can catch all the story since my Japanese is pretty far from fluent (I'm much better with easier games like Dragon Quest and Phoenix Wright).

Just finished RDR2. What a great game! Been playing it off and on for about a year or so and this past weekend decided to push through to the end. Now I'm just roaming the country side and exploring all the things I missed.

Been playing Deathloop off and on. It is enjoyable, but not amazing. I do like the idea behind it, going back to the same area over and over to make small changes or unlock something new after finding out some information. I do wish there was a bit more variety in maps though. Only 4 locations makes it a bit tedious.

I've been hooked by Flight Simulator 2020 since I bought it 2 years back.

I've owned and played all the MSFS games but this one has thoroughly captivated me, even more so since playing on my new hardware and upping the visuals. The number of mods, liveries, tweaks, etc is just mind numbing. I've put over 500 hrs into it in the last couple of years and I don't see myself slowing down anytime soon. Currently flying the A330 and 787 on transatlantic/transpacific flights.

Also coming to the end of Red Dead Redemption 2 after about 115 hours . Truly a spectacular experience I'm somewhat sad to see coming to an end. Currently in the Epilogue and ready to finish up soon, but I'll likely fire it up occasionally just to gallop around and explore.

Next up will likely be Elden Ring since I've owned it since Christmas but wanted to finish up RDR before starting it.

I've been playing this on and off. It's a huge game but still has consistently high quality quests and story. I like the wild west setting which is rare in games in general, and it also has amazing graphics outdoors. Some of the gameplay and PC controls are janky though.

This game is decent but gets repetitive quickly, once you have explored all the maps. It's not as good as Arkane's earlier games.

I feel like I'm trying to love RDR2 based on its hype and merit. Yes, I had fun with it and it was immersive. But it wasn't quite as addicting.

Gunplay was so boring, even with mouse.

It's easily a GOTY contender (I'd put Spider Man on par for that 2018 crown too), but there's a few niggling things that kept it from being one of my ALL-TIME greats. The hopelessly predictable missions ("Oarthur! We just need one more train job before we get to Tahiti! Go here and get the thing and talk to Mr. Soandsuch and come back with the Doo-Dad". Proceed to place X and A) Either get ambushed by 30 guys there, or be ambushed by 30 guys on the way back. I get it, it's a shooter/action game, but exactly how many THOUSANDS of O'Driscolls have I and my six other buddies slaughtered without breaking a sweat? Were they recruited from Imperial stormtroopers? It robs it of a certain tension and immediacy, which matters for such a narrative heavy game.
Gunning down 50+ cops and then turning up a few days later and sauntering on by them without a worry in the world was also a little silly.

I've seen that. Hilarious because it's so true. Especially the ending "O'Driscoll debriefing" of how many men they lost.
