Why is that?

Well, I watch plenty of movies, but I see most of the blockbusters in the theater so I get the experience then. At home, I watch a lot of foreign, indie, and classic movies which don't really need a surround sound system.

And at most I'll watch 2 movies in a day (I hardly ever do that any more) but the rest of the time, there's almost always music on whether its digital or analog. Hence the emphasis on 2-channel.

I'm running Dynaudio Contour S1.4 and a Velodyne DD-12, in addition to various equipment, so the system's always changing. I might even up and sell it all in the next week or so since I'm going to be away for 6 out of the 9 months. It's about time for an upgrade anyway...

Well the speakers haven't changed for 4 years now, which is the longest I've ever held on to a set of speakers. I know the Contours will get upgraded but I can't decide what to do on the sub front.

I'd be happy to take it off your hands . I'll even pay for shipping!

Then, once you don't have a sub, you'll be forced to upgrade (which is what you want to do anyways).

5.1. All of my speakers came from garage sales for less than $30 for all of them. I bought my sub for $100, and my receiver for $200.

As of this week: 2.0 with Polk 150's. And its much better than 5.1.

Are you saying 2.0 is better than 5.1 period? Or are you saying that your 2.0 setup is better than the 5.1 setup you had? If it's the former, I want what you're smokin'!

I'm counting two subs and bass shakers all running of the LFE output to be ".1", so 7.1

general bass shakers split off the bass track specifically, or a D-Box setup?

And oh, come on, you totally need to claim you have 7.2! Or, gasp... 7.3!
I totally would. That way you can e-peen ++.
Two more than other people! :awe:

I'd love to have a second sub, but a priority on any kind of extra investment into the sub category would definitely be something specifically for furniture, be it general bass shakers or specifically D-Box. I should look into D-Box reviews since it seems quite a few movies now have that on Blu-ray.

I'm going to be upset when I move into true apartment though. My apartment-dorm is very well done in terms of sound-proofing, so I don't worry about cranking up volume (decent 5.1 system, main glory for this college student is the Paradigm PS10 sub).

Unless I can find buddies when I move out for real, sharing a house won't be likely. Turning down the sub volume level will completely break my heart if I end up living in an apartment with crappy walls.

(after graduation in a month-ish, moving back in with parents for just shy of a year, leave for 4 months of training, then move out officially, likely back to Columbus or nearby instead of the hometown. All that moving and dealing with multiple leases would just be a nightmare otherwise)

The LFE output of my main receiver gets split off two ways.

One way goes to my SVS AS-EQ1 Subwoofer Equalizer that sends the signal out to my two subs. (MultEQ-XT calculated for 20 measurement positions)

The other way goes through a 50Hz low pass filter into an amp for the shakers.

As long as this isn't for a huge room or require large SPLs...I would look at Rythmik. Seems like all the rage these days for music quality. They sell servo subwoofers.

Their entry level subwoofer is the F-12 with a 300W amp at $699.

http://www.rythmikaudio.com/F12.html

According to the graph on their site, it looks like around 10 Hz - 120 Hz +/- 3db.

Ikka at Hometheater shack tested the sub and he got 12.5 Hz - 109 Hz +/- 3db (it looks like he tests it at some abandoned parking lot or something). It's a "fast" sub with very low group delay thanks to the servo technology.

Edit: I see you have a DD-12...that's $3k!!

The Rythmik is bigger and badder though And you can move up the chain if you need more SPLs you can move up to the E15 with 15" driver and 600W amp...in piano black for only $1299

5.1 in fam room. 2.1 in bedroom1, 5.1 in masterbedroom, 7.1 in basement theater room, 2.0 in exercise room, 2.1 in mancave, 2.0 in every other room in the house including kitchen.

The mzc66 is a bit dated but pushes audio well throught my house and outdoor space.

5.1 in living room. 5.1 in my bedroom/entertainment room. 2.0 usage 75% of the time. My main (sierra1) have enough bass for almost everything. 5.1 is only for movies/shows or ps3 gaming.

3.1 currently. Have speakers for 5.1 but too lazy to run the wires and mount them. Plus I live in an apt and hate to put holes in the walls.
