Great thread! Sick of trolls coming into my threads that they have no interest in, but feel the need to post some unrelated dumb stuff just to be trolls. If you don't like the thread, just stay out of it!

The cloud.

"As a forward-thinking company, we'd like to integrate a cloud solution to leverage our technological capabilities to improve our synergy with our valued customers." Plz stop. Plz.
It bugs me more that people keep saying it annoys them.

The word has meaning to regular folks. It means "elsewhere, not on my own machine."

Because AWS is so much different from any other remote host?

From my side, it's coming from people who want to 'AWS-ify' while acknowledging that we're not going to be out of the local hardware business. If we'll always have local hardware, why cloudify anything? You're just paying more for the same thing.

Yeah. I'd definitely prefer to have more control when possible.

Though remote systems should be designed around redundancy, AWS has had some major disruptions recently. Even their status page couldn't update at first.

I've never used AWS, but I work for an ISP and got a lot of flak from people who assumed their various problems were caused by our network (many malfunctioning devices and services didn't have an obvious affiliation with Amazon).

Fuckers that don't use their blinkers. If I were running things, my stormtroopers would yank them out of their cars, execute them on the spot, then auction the car to the highest bidder. The whole process shouldn't take more than .5 hours.

Dude. The other week one day like everyone banded together and decided not to use their signals. It was driving me nuts! I wanted to follow them home and punch them in their nuts. Even if they had no nuts.

Oh man. Insomnia is awful. I had it for like 25 years. Couldn't turn my brain off at night.

Mine turned out to be food-related (long story). Now I can fall asleep within 15 minutes, no problem. Enormous quality of life difference. Hope you get some relief man

yah mon. It's brutal. To just be able to lay down my head and sleep without the assistance of some sort of substance would be amazing. I just switched pharmacies and needed a prior authorization for my sleeping pill to be covered by insurance and it took my shitty doc 5 days to do it. I didn't sleep more than 2-3 hours, per day, in 5 days.

If you have time to tell your story, I'm curious. Maybe it could be of assistance.

I actually had a conversation with someone though, that went like this:
Management guy: We should move this to AWS
Me: Why?
Management guy: It's AWS, it's in the cloud.
Me: Are we ever going to get out of having hardware?
Management guy: Nope. Too many things have to be kept in-house for legal reasons.
Me: So the level of hardware required to support that stuff, as well as the stuff you're suggesting we cloudify, will always be there?
Management guy: Yeah.
Me: So I should spend time, and we should spend money, setting up an AWS infrastructure, linking everything together, testing, and verifying functionality, to move this to the cloud, just to have it in the cloud?
Management guy: Mm. Maybe not.

Cloudy systems are good for some stuff but not everything, and in most cases it's not necessary. Valid use cases are global webpages which are overloaded enough that having high latency actually impacts the page performance, DFS infrastructure that you cannot source a physical server for, or a complete, from-scratch build of a domain in which you've determined a cost-analysis to work in your favor to not bother with local hardware (IMO at least).

I'm sick of my insomnia. It's a terrible affliction. Which is why I'm making a dumb thread at 2:30 in the morning.

+1 re: insomina. It is a real bitch. I've had it since I started law school in 2003. I go weeks sleeping 2-4 hours a night, and then crash for 12+ hours.

I'm also sick of bacon. There are still people on cooking shows saying 'bacon makes everything better'. No it doesn't. It's not even the best topping for an egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. That honor goes to Taylor Ham. Which is pretty much only available in NJ. So if you're lucky enough to live in NJ, enjoy!

-1000000000000000000000000000000000000 - F you in your dirty lying mouth. The fact that bacon makes everything better is so undeniably true that it should be accepted as the fourth law of thermodynamics. Yes I know that bacon has nothing to do with thermodynamics - the point is its good, everyone loves it (even those who say they don't), and so it should be accorded its appropriate status as one of the universal truths of our physical existence.

How the hell do you function on a few hours sleep for days in a row? I barely function. I take Lunesta to help me sleep but it's not enough. I have to drink to knock me out and then the Lunesta keeps me asleep for the night. Alcohol is good at knocking you out but doesn't give you fitful sleep past a few hours - so the 1-2 combo works. It's not healthy but it's the only solution I've found. I'm trying meditation this week with the help of an app.

I had issues the last 6 days getting my sleeping pills cause my insurance company and doctor are shitty - so I barely slept more than 2 hours a night. I'm like a zombie and in physical pain. I dunno how you do it.

Honestly for a long time it just hasn't been a problem. I've never needed a lot of sleep, and I seem to be reasonably fine as long as I get an average of 3 hours sleep. There are days when I feel incredibly fatigued, and sometimes I just crash. But I'm never in physical pain or anything like that.

Lately I've been taking melatonin and have been actively trying to go to bed at pretty much the same time every night. Sometimes it works and I can get more sleep, but a lot of the time I just lay in bed staring at the ceiling for an hour or two.

I guess you are lucky and unlucky. Unlucky to have insomnia but lucky to function well on little sleep. Insomnia is horrible, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I need at least 6 hours of sleep, so it's a bummer.

I tried melatonin, it didn't do anything. I'm bi-polar too, which sucks in an of itself but if God said to me you can get rid of your bi-polar or insomnia I would say without hesitation the insomnia. It's not just trouble falling asleep, it's not being able to sleep many hours without waking up and being completely unable to go back to sleep.

I stopped by my local supermarket after work (aka neffing) today and picked up a roll/loaf/log/whatever of this stuff. It's just a typical chain store down here in Texas.

What should I make with it after I make the breakfast sandwich? I have a pound of the stuff.

I don't actually know of any purpose for Taylor Ham besides on an egg sandwich, preferably with cheese - or as a meat accompaniment for some sort of breakfast egg dish with hash browns.

You got Taylor Ham in Texas? That's impressive.

I've seen Taylor Ham in NJ and in Long Island. I've never even seen it in Manhattan, although of course my sample size is relatively small. When I worked in the city I got alternative meat egg and cheese sandwich options. It boggles my mind that Taylor Ham possibly didn't make the jump the measly few miles to NYC!

So, in other words... just eat breakfast every meal for the next few days? lol

Assuming that's what this is, then yeah. Seen it for awhile now, never thought to pick it up until I remembered you (and my Jersey-born coworker) praising it all the time.

Yep that's the legit stuff. There are some other brands of pork roll but Taylor Ham is the real deal. Three to four slices is what you need on a sandwich.

Breakfast sandwiches in are definitely in your near future lol It does last awhile in the fridge though. At least a couple weeks. You'll make it through. Let me know what you think of it. We are obsessed with it here in NJ. It's at every bagel store without fail and the most common topping on breakfast sammies. I worked in a couple bagel stores and that's how it was there at least.

Work. I'm considering looking for another job but I'm comfortable and like my co-workers.

Not getting enough sleep. It's my own fault but I find it really hard to go to bed early. It's just super hard for me to have a long day and then get only 30 minutes or an hour of relaxation before having to go to bed, so I stay up later and don't get enough sleep.

Being alone sucks too.
