I’m kind of over travel to be honest. Last year, I got a free trip to Maui courtesy of the company and we went to the UK during the holidays, but I’d prefer not going anywhere this year. With my job and business going strong, I just don’t have the time I used to have and will probably just take some random long weekends to relax. My wife, of course, has a much different perspective.

3 weeks in Alaska in June. Might do DC or upstate NY for Spring Break, but that isn't decided yet. Not sure what else we'll do.

Will try to do a family/friends reunion trip in DC area this summer again. Had it all planned last summer and family got hit with the rona last min canceling everything. Other than that work travel is back on again so the mad travel rush has already begun.

I live outside DC and would never waste a trip to come to DC lol.

My girlfriend moved there for a job beginning of last year. As someone who had never been there before, there is a lot to do. The free museums and zoo are a huge plus. I visit every month for a week or so, and there is usually something new to explore each time. We also travel outside of the city to do things though.

This year, besides DC, I have planned...

Atlanta if the Bills/KC game happens
Cottage in Ontario, CA
NYC for a wedding
Hilton Head, SC
Possibly New Orleans
Seattle, then onto Victoria Island for a week or 2

I added to my list today, walks around the neighborhood. I have about 20 other entries, all off the top of my head.

One is to climb Half Dome in Yosemite (no, not the shear face, the trail).

Some others:

Point Reyes

Santa Cruz

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Point Lobos

Las Vegas in about 3 weeks, just for a long weekend
Maui in May
I'm climbing in the Washington Cascades in August

...leaving Mrs Ned & Me about 2 weeks of vacation to use sometime this year, although we have no plans for them yet. Most likely we'll try to visit our property in Idaho sometime.
What, all of them?

Hm, what qualifies as travel? I may go to Colorado in December, that's definitely travel. If I go to Portland, OR for a few days, that doesn't really feel like "travel" to me since it's only a couple hours away, same with going to Port Angeles at 2.5 hours away.

It's all what you make it. I don't travel outside the immediate area. I can have fun spending a day looking for rocks in a creek, and seeing what there is to see in the woods. Go off the trails, and look at the small details. There's interesting stuff out there if you keep your eyes open.

A have a whole slew of mountains I can drive to in an hour or two, hike up, come down, then go home for a well-earned dinner

I find staycations can be fun and less stressful and cheaper too. And yeah sometimes there can be stuff right in your own city that you never even thought of checking out especially in the outskirts. Trails etc.

No actual plans to go far myself but I'll probably spend lot of time on my off grid property this summer and actually bring a tent and food etc and stay there for days at a time when I have a stretch of time off. Need to really start clearing some land and start building. Going to treat it more like a camping trip, than full blown doing work though. Last year I had morton syndrome and couldn't do anything but sit, I'm being careful with walking too much this winter to avoid getting it again. Sometimes I feel like it wants to come back but then it clears up again.

Why? You should just take it all, even if you just take a bunch of 3 day weekends - it's part of your compensation.

Because of my position, direct report to a C-Lvl, and requirements where 5-months of the year are pretty much off limits from PTO.
I encourage my direct-reports to take all of theirs by being a good boss, so while they are out I'm helping manage their teams.
I left my last job with 320hrs of PTO getting paid out, I'll leave this one with 300. It's a nice savings account.

To me time is worth more than money so I try to use everything I can. When you get paid out most of it is taxes so you barely see it anyway.

Just curious, but have you ever been more than 100 km's outside of Ontario? There's some amazing camping/hiking up in Alberta/BC area, the Rockies are a sight to behold, it's only a 30 hour drive away

Yeah SE MI doesn't have a whole lot to offer but urban sprawl. I mean there are some nice nature areas and there are certainly worse urban sprawl areas but you can't really 'get away from it all' with good hiking without some notable driving.

Also looks like a 9 hour rolleyes flight schedule change will probably shift that DC trip to somewhere else.

Perhaps my view is just shaped by working for a company where PTO doesn't roll over and it doesn't get paid out of you leave.

I've been to Sauble Beach and Wasaga Beach a few times. And been to Ottawa, and various places in Quebec including Montreal. Also went to Detroit once for a Nascar race. That's probably the furthest I've been but I can say I've been out of the country.
