What AV's good now?

I heard MSE/Microsoft Defender is no longer going to be supported, so I'm in the market for an anti-virus solution now.

What's recommended?

Thinking about getting Kaspersky or ESET, but I'm flexible.

Not sure where you heard that about MSE/Defender, but its false.

You can go HERE and find one that will fit your needs.

Been using Avira (Free) for years now. No complaints.

The free A/Vs that I know of are Bitdefender, Avira, AVG, and Avast. I currently use Bitdefender and there is no nag screen. I quit using MSE anywhere when Microsoft started disabling MSE on the XP machines I service thru definition updates. Use one and only one anti virus and keep it updated.

Emsisoft anti-malware is also pretty good. They use a behavior blocker, their engine and BitDefender's engine.

If you want to install a product to protect you i would stay away from ESET and KASPERSKy as they both seem to be working for microsoft now in a way that is sending windows problem reports through them without our consent..I simply would not trust this two for protection.

I haven't heard about this anywhere. Do you have a source for this?

Most antivirus products free and paid may collect personal information like visited websites, and not just infected and suspicious files which it finds (which may have an opt-out option). There was one report from AVC about this privacy issue in 2014.

Why we cant use two AV in same time? Kaspersky good for one cause Norton for another. Why AV developers blocking to use 2 av in one computer? Now most of computers have a lot of unused resources for that.

I always use Norton + malwarebytes together. They complement each other pretty well

https://www.av-test.org You can find here test results done by AV specialists.

From their site: Protection against 0-day malware attacks, inclusive of web and e-mail threats (Real-World Testing) - industry average: 98%

Detection of widespread and prevalent malware discovered in the last 4 weeks (the AV-TEST reference set) - industry average: 100%

It's amazing that anyone gets infected, ever!

... 98% chance of blocking a zero-day attack. That's... impressive. It's also odd how zero-day attacks stir up a lot of press considering these anti-malware products are apparently almost completely bulletproof. There was a news article recently about how Google had partnered up with Adobe in order to help them improve the security of the Flash plug-in. Sure enough, a zero-day got through despite their efforts. Why didn't they team up with these anti-malware companies, who obviously know how to detect and block stuff that they've never even encountered before?

What's truly amazing is that anyone takes these people seriously.

It's not the resources that are the problem. AV's dig deep into the OS and conflicts can occur between two similar programs. You don't want two AV's fighting to quarantine a virus do you? Or worse yet a conflict that makes both programs worthless.

Some AV's use more than one engine if you look hard enough. You can also install free "on demand" anti-malware scanners to scan downloads or to run the occasional system scan. For example I have my real time AV and use Hitman Pro free and MalwareBytes free for on demand scanning.

I suggest Avast Free Antivirus. I would NEVER EVER suggest running more than one antivirus at a time. That will slow down your pc and the AVs will wrestle each other for control of the firewall and other resources. Worst thing you can do.

I use Bitdefender Free. It's lightweight, cloud based and if a website has malware it will give you a warning before loading the site.

For my win7 I use the free 360 Total Security Essentials (not 360 Total Security). It includes option to utilize both Bitdefender and/or Avira, in addition to the QVMII AI. Light on resources, no nag screens. Have never noticed a drop in performance since installed about year ago.

I don't understand why people use Malwarebytes with another anti-virus. This could cause issues with two scanners running at the same time. Best would be to run your browser in Sandboxie.

I think it's a reasonable bet that most people using Malwarebytes are using the free version, which doesn't have on-access / auto protection (ie. it only runs when you tell it to run a scan), at which point there's no problem.

For Malwarebytes its ok to just have the free version installed for on demand scanning with another AV installed as long as MBAM isnt running in the background and only the other AV is. So that you would be using MBAM on an on demand basis. And the other AV to realtime protect the pc.

Honestly since Im a tech that removes malware all day, on my home pc I use just the defender in win 10 and avast free in 7. I dont see the need for heavy protection unless you like to download and install random stuff. Which is where almost all malware comes from now.
