What a coincidence I just started reading the Tomas Covenat books . I hated the first one but my mom really likes them so I trudged through it. 3/4s of the way through the 3rd book now and it and the 2nd book were a lot better.

Mortalis by R.A. Salvatore

It's the first book of his that I have read since the Dungeons and Dragons books (Dragonlance series?) from 10 years ago

I just got done reading the 2001 and 2010 and decided to take a 'break' for awhile. After I read the three books in the Salvatore series, I'll complete the 2001 series.
