What book(s) are you reading right now?

I've tried starting "Don Quixote" but I'm struggling mightily. I can't seem to get into it at all.

Great book. Don't give up on one of the best books ever written.

I'm reading Looking for Alaska by John Green.

I'm still reading through "The War Against Boys" and damn, it's making me think of whether or not I'd want to send my kids to public school if I had them. Jesus there's some whacko nutters that have a big influence in educational policy in the nation.

I also decided to get another book (saw it mentioned a couple pages back in this thread): The 10,000 Year Explosion: How Civilization Accelerated Human Evolution. Haven't read too much of it so far but it's interesting.

Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid Chronicles are good as well, if you like Dresden Files.

I'm currently reading the previous Sandman Slim novel Kill City Blues by Richard Kadrey. The new novel The Getaway God comes out tomorrow (8/28/14). If you like Urban Fantasy you might want to check out Sandman Slim, it is much more gritty then Dresden, but I enjoy it. The first book Sandman Slim goes on sale on Amazon Kindle for $0.99 regularly.

Giants Lost Civilizations book 1 by Vaughn Heppner

Reading it because it sounded interesting and it was being given away free on amazon to try and hook you into buying the rest of the series. Don't think it is going to work. I'm over a 1/3 into the book and there still isn't a plot and I have no idea WTF is going on. Author must have a lot of friends giving it 5 star reviews. About to quit and move on to next free most likely bad book if it doesn't improve soon.

1st 3 were done by ludlum many years ago. When he passed away the series was turned over to Lustbader. He was a great fit for the series and has done a great job continuing. Unlike the movie series that went in the tank after the last Matt Damon one.

Sandman Slim was fun.

I just finished Ready Player One by Ernest Cline which I enjoyed.

I just started Doctored: The Disillusionment of an American Physician by Sandeep Jauhar.

Two books at the moment:

Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong

I highly recommend this if your knowledge of history mostly comes from high school - even if you think you don't like history. This book will be eye-opening and give you an idea of why those classes were so awful (unless you lucked into an exceptional teacher). Also, don't mistake the title for an indictment of teachers - it isn't, it's really about how horrible the textbooks are.

I'm only a few chapters in but it's interesting so far. A movie is coming out soon.

Just finished the Audible version of Hounded: The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I want to continue with the audiobook version as the narrator just was not that great, I think the I'll read the rest. I'm off to Amazon to look for more of the Iron Druid.

I would especially love to hear your opinion on the prose.

I haven't gotten that far in, and I just discovered I can't renew it because it's hot and has holds on it, but it hasn't disappointed. It's well written, in the "crisp, thriller plot moving right along" type of way. That is to say, the author is not Vladimir Nabokov or Thomas Pynchon, but who the hell is, anyway?

This sounds like I'm damning it with faint praise, but I'm not. I give it a very solid B++!

In the spirit of William Gibson and Chuck Palahniuk, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is both a suspenseful global thriller and an emotionally truthful novel about the struggle to change the world in- and outside your head.

While it may not be great literature, it is good entertainment.
