I'm so interested in non-fiction, I have no inclination to seek out fiction. As a kid I read a lot of science fiction, however, it was the genre that got me really interested in reading. I think nowadays a lot of non-fiction has much of the same appeal I got from science fiction back in the day.
Yep, same with me. I used to love sci-fi and that was more or less what I read (though I didn't read nearly as much in high school or college as I do now), but non-fiction (history, military history, biographies mainly) is about all I read now. I still like sci-fi but it just doesn't hold the appeal as it once used to.

Now in the middle of Mistborn, I'm really enjoying it. Interesting magic system too.
If you like the Mistborn trilogy, you should check out his other series, The Stormlight Archive. There is also a follow-up Mistborn universe book that takes place several hundred years after the trilogy that was enjoyable.

Also reading:
Revolution in Time - Clocks and the Making of the Modern World by David Landes

The book is pretty good but I'm sort of slogging through it while reading other stuff.

Finally finished the book after setting it aside for a bit. It's a pretty good book overall but the author is not technically inclined and has difficulty explaining the mechanisms he covers. The services of a good technical illustrator would have helped greatly.

Now reading The Finn Family Moomintroll.

Side note, but pretty much all of Sanderson's books take place in the same universe, but usually on different worlds.

Yeah, except his young-adult series, Steelheart. That supposedly does not take place in the same "universe" (universe is a strange term, because it seems more like a dimensionality thing instead of a single universe, but that's nitpicking over unimportant details).

Following up on my post a few pages back regarding "The Shadow Of What Was Lost" (The Licanius Trilogy Book 1) by James Islington. I finished the book about 2 weeks ago and I give it 5 stars! Fans of Jordan, Sanderson, Abercrombie, Cook, Rothfuss, and GRRM will enjoy this book. I cannot wait for the 2nd book in this series.

Yeah, I don't think his Steelheart series is in the same universe either, so I should have probably said most, not pretty much all.

I also just started Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War by Robert Gates. I am not usually so "gripped" by an autobiographical work, but I had a hard time putting it down and keep thinking back it, wanting to read more. Can't wait to put in more time.

I have that book and started it but only got about 10 pages into it so far. I just have too many damn books to read.

I have that one and a couple of other physical books, two on my Kindle, one on my Android phone (Google Play Book), and a few on Audible. lol :awe:

Over the summer I read Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World. It was quite fascinating and incredibly informative. Kahn was not the barbarian he's so often made out to be. Closest parallel I can think of is Alexander the Great, but his influence was probably much much greater than Alexander's.

I totally get it. I need to hurry up and read books and stop buying them...lol.

I finished the trilogy last night and was extremely impressed - one of the best fantasy series I've read in a long time. Sanderson doesn't have the sheer technical writing and characterization skill of say Donaldson or Bakker, but his world-building and plotting are amazing.

I just finished book 1 of the Aliomenti Saga, A Question of Will, by Alex Albrinck. I liked it. Hopefully the rest of it is as good. If you like SciFi or Fantasy, give it a shot.

Currently free on iTunes or Kindle book stores. It's free, nothing to lose.

"Trapped Under the Sea: One Engineering Marvel, Five Men, and a Disaster Ten Miles Into the Darkness" by Neil Swidey. It's about this tunnel they built for the sewage treatment plant in (near) Boston. I knew nothing about the project going in and about a third of the way into the book. Pretty good...fascinating stuff.

Rereading Darkness upon the Deep. Funny how much of the story I have forgotten over the last decade. The only thing that kept with me was the group mind dogs.

Isaac Asimov - 'Caves of Steel', 'The Naked Sun' and 'The Robots of Dawn' (three books in a series and along the same vein).

Ignoring the protagonist's use of the word 'Jehoshaphat', I've really enjoyed everything I've read by Asimov (including the original 'I, Robot' short stories).

Just started "Rendezvous With Rama" audiobook. One of my friends found out I had never read it and gifted me a copy. Apparently it is good, and falls well into my love of historical Science Fiction, even though it was written in the 70's and I mostly love sci-fi written in the 1940s and '50s.

I just finished:

Wool
by Hugh Howey

Great book, fun read. I am really excited to read the sequels, Shift and Dust, but first I want to expand my horizons and give myself a break for once. I've always plunged right ahead and read an entire series before moving on, like with Dune and The Dark Tower. I need to further develop my library for a multitude of reasons.

I just started:

The Road
by Cormac McCarthy

I gotta say, this might be the most difficult read I've had yet. I am not at all exceptionally well-read, at least in terms of a wide selection of authors, and I am trying to change that.

This book though, the prose is, well I don't know how to describe it. The style for dialog is also sort of perplexing.

I've been trying to read it before bed and, well, it's putting me to sleep after a few pages. (mind you, I have been tired each time and was hoping for just that, but my oh my it happens fast). It's dense, if that's a proper and accurate description of prose.

I've always heard this was an exceptional novel, so do I just need to give it some more time? Get invested in the story and the struggle will melt away?

What say you, ATOT?

I say keep going. I read the entire thing in a day though, so perhaps if you don't feel compelled to keep reading that might not be a good sign. McCarthy in general can be challenging at times. The Road is written in a way to help convey the extremely dark subject matter which might be why you are having problems getting into it. There is nothing happy about that book.
