The Federalist Papers. First thing I've read in awhile. I've read parts of them over the years, but figured it was time to read them all.
Careful man, I hear that there are ideas in there.

I need to read them as well.

But what if they clash with what someone from today who is on facebook on their smartphone all day wants to believe?

Does that mean that the Federalist Papers are unamerican and we need to burn them?

That said I know there were a lot of clashing ideas among the Founding Fathers and I do not know as much about the subject As I need to know. Sometime I am going to have to catch up to what to what is necessary knowledge about America and political philosophy.

That said I do believe some federal power is necessary and I have somewhat supported a true American Federal Bank which as far as I am aware of we have not actually had yet.

Isn't the Federal Reserve a kind of federal banking institution that influences the banking sector? It's private, sort of, makes decisions that affect the whole sector. There's also the FDIC, which guarantees deposits now up to $250k in participating financial institutions. That kind of federalizes the banks, to an extent.

Speaking of the Federalist Papers, I've been curious about that. I've seen it offered on my Kindle. Is it worth reading?

Yes it is in some way a Federal Bank but it is private and even the earlier official Federal Banks were private organizations that were not run by the government.

Finished "The Unraveling" by Emma Sky. It was pretty good.

I think the next book after that I picked up was "Last Stand - Surviving America's Collapse." I've only read one of these prepper-type series before, "299 Days," but this "Last Stand" series was WAY better, I thought. Mainly I thought the writing was better, even though I wasn't so sure at the start (grammar errors, which are fine when a character speaks like that, but not the actual plot writing). There's five books in the series and I read them all pretty quickly and couldn't put them down. I thought the last book wasn't quite as strong but overall they were pretty good.

So a few days ago I picked up another one, "Escaping Home." So far I don't enjoy this one as much as "Last Stand" but it ain't terrible. Mainly I think there's far too much unnecessary detail included in the writing but I think I like it better than "299 Days" so far.

I guess these prepper-type novels are a guilty pleasure. I mainly stick to non-fiction, history, military, but I find I enjoy these "end of the world" prepper stories quite a bit.

It gives some back story to the formation of the US Constitution. I'm currently on paper 6, and they're still making the case for a single central government
instead of individual states, or larger confederations of states.

I wouldn't get it from Amazon, cause fuck Amazon. They spy on your reading, and can snatch your books away from you. You can find it at archive.org, spy free, and no strings attached.

Was out of fresh material, so I am re-reading the exorcist. Havent read it in around 15 years. Always good to go back to the classics.

Thanks. I found a Kindle ebook for free here: Kindle ebook at Gutenberg.org. Glanced at the beginning, paper 2, starts with this sentence which is, I think, a good one for you:

"Nothing is more certain than the indispensable necessity of government, and it is equally undeniable, that whenever and however it is instituted, the people must cede to it some of their natural rights in order to vest it with requisite powers."

I remember posting something like that sentiment to you in a thread!

The Harder They Come by T. C. Boyle. Recommended by GQ so I picked it up. Interesting story about this recluse junkie and his anti-establishment girlfriend, and their friends and families. So far so good.

Worthy Fights by Leon Panetta. I picked up Panetta's autobiography largely based on the fact that Bob Gates essentially hand-picked him to replace him as Defense Secretary. I'm mostly in love with Gates. This book has been good and interesting, but Gates' book has so much more warmth, nuance, and emotion to it. I feel like Panetta's book accurately conveys what happened during those years but without drawing me into the strong and stirring emotions I felt while reading Duty by Gates.

I finished "Escaping Home" by A. American. It got a little better as I went on and overall I thought the book was ok. I don't plan on reading the rest in the series though, so I guess I didn't find it amazing, haha.

Now I am reading "CyberStorm" by Matthew Mather. It's about a cyber attack (terrible snowstorms happening at the same time) on the city of NYC and country as a whole basically. The quality of writing is much better than the other end-of-the-world books I've read lately, but I guess this guy is a bestselling author so it's not surprising. I'm about halfway through at this point; pretty good so far.

I'm in the middle of "The Martian" and it is fantastic. Even if you don't like science fiction, you may like this. No aliens, FTL, etc. just straight up real science. Think "Apollo 13" with a Mars mission and you'll be on the right track.

PS: I have no idea how the movie will be. This book was in my queue long before I even knew there was going to be a moive.

I just started reading Console Wars. Can't put it down. Very fucking entertaining and totally fascinating for anyone who grew up in that time.

I should get into some heavier reading I guess but at my age, perhaps the question is why? Having said that, I spent winter through early spring reading the entire Jack Reacher series (except the four I had already read). I've got a love of this series except for the latest release, 'Personal'. All of the other books were written in third person but for whatever reason Lee Child wrote Personal in first person and it sucked. I was so disappointed. His next, 'Make Me' is due out in September and I'm hoping he gets back into his groove.

Edit: Forgot the best part. All free as eBooks through the library.

Just finished reading the entire Mistborn series, up to Alloy of Law, by Brandon Sanderson. I really enjoyed the first book, Mistborn, and the most recent book, Alloy of Law, as both are very original. The books in between were less so. I'll continue to read the series as new ones come out.

At lunch today I started reading A. Lee Martinez's Emperor Mollusk Versus the Sinister Brain.

Start the Harry Bosch, Charlie Parker, Lincoln Lawyer or the Agent Pendergast series. That'll keep you busy.

Loved it. One of my favorite books from the last couple years. I'm not a big sci-fi fan...definitely not aliens and stuff, but still found the book awesome.

I have doubts about the movie living up to it. I think Matt Damon should be a decent choice, but haven't really thought much about it other than that.
