I've just read the Count of Monte Cristo, around 1243 pages (unabridged version). Awesome, awesome, classic (first time reading it). I'm not sure what to read next though (and I have not read much books at all).

Books I've read this year:

Count of Monte Cristo (amazing, best book I've read by FAR)
Frankenstein (good)
1984 (good)
Fight Club (overrated? weird? kinda cool)
Mankind: Have a nice day (awesome - im a WWF/WCW fan)

Thinking about reading:

Les Miserables
The Brothers Karamazov
War and Peace
Atlas Shrugged
Don Quixote

Since I haven't really read that many books I don't know what kind I'm really interested in, so I'm open to any that you may recommend.

Read some short books like Animal Farm or Anthem. They should take you about a day or two.

Lord of the Flies is also good, while we're on the topic of short classics.

war and peace is winter-time reading.

looking solely at that last, I'd go with Atlas Shrugged.

The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon-Marigolds*

Trinity

Moomin Summer Madness

*Just kidding, a book only a psychotic junior HS english teacher could love.

I'm reading Don Quijote right now, in Spanish. Very enjoyable, although the language gets complex at times, especially for an average reader like myself.

That's one depressing novel, I remember reading that in HS.

I would recommend Crime and Punishment.

Depending on your preference / age you might like Perks of Being a Wallflower (aimed towards teenagers and young adults). You should check out Terminal Man (psycho thriller), Flowers for Algernon (the WHOLE book, not just the excerpt they put in high school anthologies), the Merlin Series by T.A. Barron (if you like fantasy), and Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King (another fantasy/mystery type).

I never knew that was a book. I should read it.

I recommend Catch-22.

Seconded.

I read a bunch of Mark Twain years ago but somehow managed to avoid Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. Puddinhead Wilson was good.

Uncle Tom's Cabin was good, and it was interesting to see how the person Uncle Tom differs from the popular meaning of the epithet.

The Oddyssey was a decent read, interesting for how bits and pieces are as influential in modern culture as Shakespeare.

If you haven't read it, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy (all five books).

I highly recommend you finish the Harry Potter series. The last 3 books make for an epic tale.

And for a more philosophical read, grab Atlas Shrugged

You won't regret it

i like the idea of reading short, classic novels. if youve not read them in highschool, they are good to read

a separate piece
the wave
the giver
to kill a mockingbird
1983
night
catcher in the rye
roll of thunder hear my cry
things fall apart
(all these books were enjoyable to read when i was younger. i like to go back and read some of these again because they really just were so very good)

other options
a million little pieces
the freedom writers diary
through violet eyes (murder mystery kinda thing if youre interested)
