I have had serveral notebooks, but for the money I have had good experiences with Dell notebooks and support. If you wanting to play games on it then you have to come up with some serious cash but their budget notebooks work well for business or school kinds of tasks. If your going to buy one from best buy or CompUSA then I'd say HP is the better option from retail. I've not had good luck with Sony notebooks their support is terrible to deal with. IMHO

well, considering all the major names flip around their OEMs for laptops, it's a toss up always.

Really - it depends on one's personal experience. The consensus appears to be IBM. Dell gets a lot of votes - but their design is somewhat proprietary and their support sometimes lacks. Today, most of the reviewers are giving the nod to H-P. They have one little thing that is outstanding in my book - a small switch on top of the stupid touchpad that turns it off.
Current Compaqs share that feature . Compaq - H-P - same - same.

I've had Thinkpads. I've had Inspirons and I've used Latitudes.

Thinkpads are better. By far.

I'll second all of this. People who hate Compaq are stupid people who live in the past. HP=Compaq, just like GMC=Chevy for trucks. HP/Compaq is an excellent value IMO, but Thinkpads rule most in quality. Sager/Acer/Asus might be up there, but I haven't had the opportunity to play with one. Yet

I'd put IBM Thinkpads securely in first, Thinkpads in second, and Thinkpads in third... in fourth maybe Toshiba.

Definitely IBM, no contest. I just got a Thinkpad and its true what they say, once you go Thinkpad you never go back. I will probably never buy another brand again (if future Thinkpads are built the same), love the keyboard and build quality. The only thing missing is a widescreen version

Only if you don't like to game. Thinkpads make good work laptops but for gaming they are far behind even mainstream vendors like Dell.

this is true enough. You CAN get one with a good video card, but you're gonna pay through the nose for it.
But I've been in love with Thinkpads for years (the keyboard alone is a deal-closer for me, but the high quality/durability of their products shouldn't be overlooked). Every thinkpad I've had got handed off to a relative after I upgraded, since they still worked good as new.

That said, the A-series of the thinkpad line has the worst rep as far as glitches go, so maybe steer clear of those.

I've also had a Compaq Presario, and had no complaints about it's performance whatsoever. Except the keyboard felt a little flimsy.

Apple and IBM. Both actually care about the design of their laptops - not so much looks, but the features that are actually useful to someone who intends to travel. Dell's laptops tend to be both cheaply made and not as well-suited to travelling.

Are you, commodus, actually saying that Apple doesn't care about their looks?
That's why there's no G5 lappy from them. Be too big...
