What can a Creative Dxr2 Decoder do?

I've had this Creative Dxr2 Decoder card around for quite sometime now and I was wondering if it can send anything to a TV throught the TV out or just DVDs? Cause I really want to be able to watch DivX and stuff but if its only going to to do DVDs then its not really worth installing. So what do you think?

The DXR2 can output to your TV.
Not only will it allow you to watch DVDs from your PC to your TV but with the Encore software player you should be able to output AVI, Divix, mpeg, mpeg2.

Interesting, how about a link? Other than a poor divx hack, my impression is the Hollywood and Dxr2 cards only output DVD's.

I don't know about the DXR2 from Creative, but I would imagine it to be the same as the Hollywood from Sigma. I have the Hollywood card to hardware decode my dvds for viewing over my TV. It works great on DVDs and MPEG files, but it can not do AVI/DivX or any other video format.

I guess it just depends on what kind of drivers that Creative includes with their hardware. The Hollywood+ card wouldn't do the other movie formats cause their drivers didn't support it, but who knows, the hardware might be capable.

ONLY DVDs, but ANY 5.1 Dolby Digital audio stream.

Here's a pretty good trick, though: with both a hardware decoder AND a TV-out card in your system, you can watch DVD's from any region and any TV system on your plain-old NTSC TV set. That's something done only by expensive standalone machines.

nope. the DXR3 is a rebadged Hollywood Plus, but the DXR2 is vastly inferior.

The DXR2 and DXR3 are different.

As far as output to TV.......You need the proper software.

I can't remember for sure about the AVI or Divix output though....maybe through TV out on Video Card.

Thats the whole thing I didn't want to have to buy a TV-out card if I already have one and I already have a standalone DVD player so I really don't need it for the DVD part!! and if its not going to play anything but DVDs then its not going to be worth the time to monkey with. HA HA!! Looks like I might have to buy that new video card anyways that I don't have the money for

With the DXR2 decoder card you can display DVDs, VCDs, and even MPEG-1/2 files on your TV. As far as I know there isn't a way to do AVI or DivX with it. I wish there was.

For what it's worth, though, you should be able to find a de-MacroVision hack for the DXR2 card. That way, you can make VHS backups of all your friends movies in case his house burns down
