Japanese whalers deny mother and calf slaughter -- "statement issued yesterday, the Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR) described the Australian response to the the image as "emotional propaganda".

"Our research program requires random sampling of the Antarctic population, and therefore there will be a range of sizes. It is necessary to conduct random sampling of the Antarctic minke population to obtain statistical data," the statement read."

August 26, 2006 Hvalba, Faroe Islands -- row upon rows of minke whales gutted and lay in the sun ready for the scientific research supermarket.

The Auzies are taking a stab at trying to stop the whale hunt in their protected water.

Only problem is there won't be any tasty whale meat left if that happens. This isn't just about saving whales, it's about preventing people from consuming out of hand to the point that we lose something we can never get back. Do you want your grandkids to be asking you "Grandpa, what did whales taste like?"? I know I don't.

As long as they say, "It's coming right for us." before they shoot them, I don't see a problem...

Highlights from our past three decades include:

* Ramming and disabling the notorious pirate whaler, the Sierra
* Shutting down half of the Spanish whaling fleet
* Documentation of whaling activities in the Faeroe Islands chronicled in the

Whaling is no different from hunting other Animals. People get the mistaken impression that they are big gentle animals that shouldn't be killed because they are too "majestic" or "cute"
I have had whale meat, dog, cat, field rat, wild boar, bear, deers, monkey, porcupines, moose, kangaroo, alligator, snakes, eels, lizards, geckos, frogs, toads, snails, dog fish/shark, skate, ++ many wild birds & insects, and most doesn't taste that good except for deers/moose/kangaroos/porcupines.

Let's hope Green Peace picks it up a notch and starts sinking these whaling ships. Fishermen aren't going to go extinct.

My grandfather & dad was hunters, and my dad wanted to make a man out of me when I was a child by forces me to eat everything that he eats.

Later in life I did some travel to remote places and had to eat what the local eats so that I wouldn't offended them.

Porcupine? I'm not so much surprised you ate it (I'd give it a try), but someone had to clean it... what did it taste like?

Wow, you are dumb.

Australian kangaroos that are culled to control overpopulation are available to buy in steaks, stews, burgers, etc... Do some research next time eh? Why the fuck should the Japanese be given a cultural exception? Do they, historically, depend on whale meat to live? Do they have myths and gods based on whales?

I guess if I'm dumb, you must be retarded.

Why are you trying to colonize their culture? They eat whale. Some people don't. Why should we force them to change when their whale catches aren't among endangered species?

Whale is a delicacy that people pay top dollar for. They don't need it to survive. Minsk whales aren't the only ones they harvest. They get anything they can. The big thing about these pictures is that it's a calf. Baby whale. Hasn't had a chance to breed. Get it?

Killing baby anything is bad. Ever hear of people hunting for immature animals of any sort? No. Why? Because if you remove the young before they can breed, it has a bigger impact on the population than if you harvest an older, mature animal.

Once again, do some research before you start defending the Japanese whaling fleet.

Depends on the species. Counter-example: bass fishermen are often pretty vocal about catch and release. However, if you are going to take a fish to eat, they'd prefer you eat the smaller bass, not the larger bass that are better reproducers.

The monkey, insects, and the porcupine got my attention as well. What does a monkey taste like, NoShangriLa?

Some people says it tastes similar to pork & others says it similar to bear meat, but to me it have its distinct taste to it.

I have bbq & stew porcupine, and bbq has to be the best tasting because porcupine is a bit fatty.

We should sell Greenpeace some decommissioned navy vessels so they can sink some Japanese ships.

Haha, I had whale for lunch last week.

My JTE told me we'd be having ? (kujira) for lunch but he seemed really excited about it. Normally, when I don't understand something a Japanese person says to me I'll blankly stare and slightly nod, either indicating that I have a slight understanding of what they are saying or that I'm another dumb foreigner unable to grasp the infinitely complex language(!). Both outcomes mean I no longer have to worry about the conversation, which is fine by me.

He was not falling for it today. Gathering a few nearby teachers (no one can really accomplish anything individually here, especially in the teacher's room) to flip through a Japanese-English dictionary. Well, they stop and start pointing... "kore wa, kore wa" as my eyes follow their fingers to the Kanji and accompanying translation; WHALE in bold letters (a sketched picture of what I could only presume was a humpback was also included in the definition, just to add to the whole experience) stared back at me.

With my broken Japanese I managed to stumble out that this would be my first time eating whale, and that in Canada we don't really have the opportunity on many occasions to violate international law (although I did eat smuggled dates from Iraq back in 2002, pretty sure that went against a few UN sanctions). Unfortunately for me, this meant I was the obvious choice for any second helpings and drew astonished stares and giggles from both male and female staff.

Lunch arrives: standard miso soup/seaweed, plain white rice, carton of milk, some vegetables and a nice whale filet. I go about finishing off everything on my plate - leaving just me and the whale - and a classroom of sannensei's wondering if I'd actually go ahead and eat the formerly awe-inspiring but currently fried to a crisp mammal in front of me. Now these kids are children of seventh generation (maybe a bit of hyperbole) fishermen. They've been gutting salmon since they could pick up a knife and classes are cancelled during the perscribed Albalone harvests so the kids can help out from 4am to 7pm on the boats. They love it.

Chopsticks in hand, I pick up the greasy meat and take a bite. The filet inside is dark, dark brown of what is only assumed to be some processed whale meat, fins, blowhole, and other bits and pieces. Bite One, mostly batter - nothing special. Bite Two brings a horrible taste to my mouth, bitter and oily, and my face shows it to the entire class. I'm not about to spit out my food; and the Japanese take finishing your entire meal very seriously, so I crunched my way through the dark mystery whale filet while a girl quietly offered a "Gambatte" from somewhere behind me... thanks.

I've had horse sashimi one weekend in Tokyo, it's nothing really spectacular; too chewy.

Cliffs:
Ate whale. Not good.

Fuck the Japanese. Worthless fucking scum. "research purposes" my ass.

Maybe we should "legally" allow the hunting of japanese for "research purpose"

They deny everything. The next thing they are going to deny is they didn't wage war in WWII.

Their school system doesn't teach that they were the aggressor against us in WWII. They teach their kids that they were acting honorably.

Yep...I was just gonna post the same thing. All kinds of revisionist history being taught in Japan about WWII.
