Depends on the chip itself. Most, if not all can do at least 4.2Ghz. What is your budget on the motheboard? You will also need to purchase an aftermarket HSF.

For cooling I have a H100i.
Budget for motherboard I would like to keep low since this is a crunching machine for Distributed Computing but if 4.5GHz is really obtainable I can spend as much as $230.

I have a 3770K @ 4.5GHz but don't know what a i5 will do...

You will not need to spend that much. Here are a coulple of boards that are known for their overclocking potential and reliability.

You obviously can spend more money to get more features and what not, but these boards are popular among enthusiasts for overclocking on a budget.

Looks like you have adequate cooling, so it would now depend on the capability of the chip and what voltage and temps you are comfortable with.

To be rather conservative is to keep your voltage at or below 1.3v, of course that is my opinion many people may think differently. I would think most chips should be able to hit 4.5Ghz at that voltage or less.

The rest is for you to try out yourself. It looks like you have a good overclock on you 3770K, the process will be the no different.

The i5s and i7s tend to overclock to the same speeds or so, but the i5s will need more voltage for it. My 3570K could get up to 4.8Ghz on auto voltage (which produced some crazy high voltages). For long term stability I was running 4.4-4.5 Ghz with around 1.3V.

4.5Ghz here, system specs listed below in sig. I didn't do anything other than change the multiplier. Voltage control is still on auto I believe and hovers just around 1.212 according to CPU-Z. Prime 95 stable as well (Max temp of 68C with a 24C case ambient) but more importantly games and applications are stable. Been running this way since about September of last year.

Mine is running at 4.4 ghz with 1.184 v. My cooler is a h60 and my mobo is z77ia-53 (msi itx board). 4.5 ghz is the highest I've tried for, and that was no problem but I prefer 4.4 because of the much lower voltage.

Same here. I can do 4.4 easily at 1.28 v. on my 3570K under significant load, but 4.5 requires a large voltage bump. Auto setting produces over 1.4 v. OP may have a better chip, however, just need to experiment.
