Actually, I had the choice of Santa Clara and Sacramento, but I chose Portland Internship for me is about the experience, the location is secondary.

I don't know much about Santa Clara. Sacramento's a cow town so I don't blame you for that one.

I was there on an internship this past summer. Nice relatively peaceful area.

You can take the public rail lines and arrive to work at Intel just fine, as they provide regular shuttles. I strongly recommend living walking distance from work, though. Look for people renting out rooms of their home right near where you'll be and you'll be golden.

It's a finance internship (I'm a first year MBA)

Portland has a great urban area downtown and nice surrounding suburbs, particularly the west side. Decent music scene, decent restaurants and great public transportation.

It's outdoor recreation heaven with Forest Park's 5000 acres immediately west of downtown within city limits, and decent skiing ~ hour at Mt Hood, a while further to awesome powder at Mt Bachelor. A little more than an hour to world class surf (xxxx), and a couple hours + to world class rock climbing mecca at Smith Rocks and nearby Deschutes river for awesome rafting and flyfishing.

Its bordered to the north by the Colombia River, and cut in half by the Willamette River. You can even see an active volcano on a clear day. Its a great place to be from
