The Intrepid and the 250 lasted several years till I was no longer a kid.
I hate to tell you, you're still a kid.
My dad owned a '55 T-bird when he and Mom dated. After they married, and my sister was on the way, he traded that in and bought a 56 Chevy Nomad station wagon. Pretty sure he had that, until 1960, when he bought a Chevy Corsair. Personally, he LOVED those cars, and had, in succession, a 62, a 64, and finally, a 65 model.
After that, he bought a station wagon (I and my brother had come along by then), since he needed more room, and wanted to be able to tow a travel trailer. Think that was around 1967 or 68, and that lasted until 1971 or 72, when he traded it for a beefier towing vehicle, an International Harvester Travelall. That one was used both as a family hauler and a trailer towing vehicle, and was great at both of them.
Meanwhile, in 1973, Mom & Dad decided to expand to a 2nd vehicle, and they bought an AMC Gremlin X. Now, those cars caught a lot of shit, for various reasons, but this one was pretty decent, as Gremlins go. It lasted until 1981, had 100,000 miles on it, and Dad finally sold it to some high school kid for $300 (after I'd left to join the Navy). I actually got the drive it for a while, after I got my license, and it was a fun little car (for its time).
In 1977, Dad ordered a Chevy Suburban, to replace the International, and that lasted him 11 years, with just under 100K miles on it. Again, family hauler and trailer towing, but with a lot more amenities, and a bigger engine, than the Travelall. In fact, Dad ordered it with bucket seats up front, the first year that Chevy offered it with them, and possibly the first Suburban sold in NY state that had them. He used to subscribe to a magazine for Chevy owners, and they broke the news of the new option, plus gave the ordering code for them. When Dad told the dealer he wanted bucket seats, they told him they weren't available on that model, and he had to show them the article (and they called the factory to confirm), in order to add it.
Finally, the year I graduated high school, 1980, Dad bought himself a new commuter car, a Pontiac 6000, his first front wheel drive vehicle. That lasted him until his early retirement, in 1987, after which my younger brother inherited it, after he finished his post-graduate degree, and started working (and I believe he had it until 1990 or so).
Mom and Dad sold their house a year later, sold the Suburban, and traded their Holiday travel trailer in on a 35' fifth wheel trailer, then bought a one ton Chevy pickup to haul it. After about 5 or 6 years of traveling, they found a place outside Phoenix they liked, and became snow birds, traveling back and forth to NY, spending 6 months in each location (and sharing a 2-bedroom apartment with my sister when they were up north.....which she had to herself, with Mom & Dad still paying 1/2 the bills, the other 6 months).
A year later, Dad traded the truck for an Oldsmobile, since they no longer needed to haul anything around, and he owned 2 or 3 of those until he passed away, a month after 911.
