To me, the 5.0 Ford V8 was the best sounding engine ever. I know, I know: 4.9 liters. Anyway, I was walking along the other day and probably an old Mustang was at a stop sign, probably a '88. Clearly had some aftermarket parts - they all do now. Likely cams and maybe new heads and an intake. Aftermarket exhaust.

DAMN that thing sounded great. Just awesome. For me, the best sound is just off idle - driving slowly away. That is the sound I melt for. Sure, it isn't racing, isn't making a lot of power, but I love that leisurely burble.

Back in the 90s, the best I ever got to hear my Ford Mustang GT, was the day I sold it. It slowly pulled away from my house burbling down the street. Sad day. I don't really miss the car - but I absolutely miss the sound.

Just an FYI, the v8 mustangs of that era only had one cam. They were 5.0l pushrod motors.

Im beefing up my transmission and planning on getting a cam job done when I replace my intake manifold for my LM7 engine

Its funny because I have literally no desire to get a loud exhaust system. In fact I would like it quiter if possible!

I do enjoy the sound of muscle cars just not with a daily driver

While I find many cars to have pleasant tones there is only one that stands out in my mind.

Nearly 20 years ago I was stationed in Germany. My wife and I saved our pennies and purchased a brand new E46 BMW. I was blessed with a girl who loved cars as much as I. We then proceeded to spend the next couple years spending every free moment touring Europe.

We were on our way back from Italy cruising at a comfortable 100 mph in the Gottard Pass tunnel when we noticed the sound. The glorious wail echoed through the tunnel for miles before I saw the lights in my rear view. Whatever it was it was coming fast. I was in the left lane passing but sensed a need for some urgency. I matted the gas and let the BMW run up to the limiter. The noise was definitely still getting louder and I could now see the headlights approaching. Blinker on. I'm ducking into the right lane, a big dog is coming.

Moments later a shiny new Diablo flashed passed and we were treated to the full symphony of a 12 cylinder getting a workout in a Swiss tunnel. As it roared out of sight both of us just looked at each other and giggled like children.

I too am very partial to early 90's Mustangs. I had a 93, and have thought seriously about getting another at some point. The sound is amazing to me. Truly one of the best.

I have a 68 Mustang that sounds pretty great too though. And a higher end sportish car that is twin turbo V6. Equally great sound, just different. The low rumble of a muscle car idling with a big cam is comparable to a higher ended car I think. I have only heard a few super cars in person, hard to beat that sound as well.

Those are my two favorite sound. Old school muscle, or high rpm performance mortars. Im very happy with both of mine.

Least favorite is the very annoying, and overly loud ricers with like 200hp. Its just embarrassing.

Nothing beats a pre 73 cars with cams. Also a european ford escort with side draft webers.

Ah - indeed. I wasn't thinking.

I'm more fond of cars that I can actually enjoy. Especially as I've grown older. So Ferrari / Lamborghini / etc may indeed sound great, but they can't ... reach my heart like something more affordable. Similarly, I often read the supercar articles in Car & Driver last. Lol... I first turn to the back to read about Kia's and VW. Well, I read the big SUV articles very last - even after the supercars.

Anyway, back on topic - another car I like the sound of - the 40 valve V8 from Audi. Like the S4 from about about about 2001 to 2005? The valves just clatter and chatter, with a v8 rumble in the background. Like a couple of crazy people talking past one another.

Have to update my answer: My current car sounds best. Infinity Kappas all around, amplified, and an 8" sub in a tuned box powered by its own amp. I spent around 5 hours tweaking it and flattening out the frequency response. I can now pump out any engine noise I want over the speakers (just like most cars now!), and the hybrid engine is quiet enough to not interfere with that.

I love the sound of any engine with a loud whiny supercharger.

Carbon fiber CSL intake fitted to a car not particularly known for sounding good:

Not sure if it's my all time favorite, but it's close, and I have a CSL intake of my own on its way from Europe. Requires DME modification, fitting an out of production MAP sensor with supporting hardware in place of the US and default Euro-spec MAF, modifying the stock wiring harness, but that induction noise ...
