HIS 6870 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-349-_-Product - $240

vs

MSI GTX 460

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127510 - $200

40 bucks more, but beats it unless latter is OCed; since I'm a noob and need to learn to OC before I judge cards based on it, I say 6870.

Sincerely,

A Scrubtastic Opinion (I credit my minor knowledge to fffblackmage and Davidh737 =D)

The 460 in your link has a $25 rebate, so its $175 AR. That and there are other 460's about $150 AR

I prefer ATI but right now the GTS450 and GTX460 (768 and 1gig) can;t be beat dollar for dollar.

going to go with the 460 as probably the best bang/$

if the 6850 & 6870 were lowered by $10-$20, it'd be a totally different game though

when the 6850's get back to there MSRP they'll take the lead, unfortunately AMD can't make enough cards to meet the demand.

Then again when that happens posts like these won't be here will they?

Does higher res really warrant the 470 vs the 460? Why, because of the extra memory or the extra bandwidth? Is that only for high AA settings?

Extra GPU power, more Vram, more tessellation engines and overclocking would make me lean towards the 470 if comparing $180+ GTX460 to $220 GTX470. If you do a mild overclock on the 470 to 750mhz, you are within 5% of GTX480's performance. That's faster than a 900mhz GTX460. The 460 is an excellent deal at $160-170 and it runs much quieter but it runs out of steam beyond 1920x1200.

Take a look at this review. A stock GTX470 is at least as fast and often outpaces an 895mhz GTX460 at 2560x1600 4AA in AvP, BF:BC2, Dirt 2, Lost Planet 2, SC2.

I should note that modern AMD cards like 6870/5850 are better than the GTX460 at higher resolutions with more AA (i.e., 8AA). But when GTX460s can be found for $160, it's very hard to recommend a $200 HD6850.

Maybe this is a trick question, since an obviously experienced member is asking it.

So, the best bang for your buck card is... your existing card. Adequate to good performance for zero expenditure. Doesn't get any more bangin' than that. Then, spend the unemployment check on food & other essentials.

Prices change everday and there are lots of short sales and rebates

but in general, best bang for the buck card right now (in the ~$60 and up range) is the GTX 460 768MB.

There are a lot more sales on the 768MB version than the 1GB version. On average the 1GB version scores about 10% more than the 768 version but costs more than 10%. Lots of $115~125 (AR) deals these days on them.

I bought the Asus version a week or so ago and it came with HAWX 2 which I got $18 for bringing my pre-tax total to below $100.

Cheapest I've seen the 1GB version is $151 AR I believe:

AMD cards seem to perform well but as someone already posted, not seeing many (any?) rebates on them right now and they are selling for msrp or higher. So they aren't faring well in bang for the buck considerations.

Amusingly enough, in France, 6850s are (in general) cheaper than 460s (1GB) by a few bucks (but not much). Nowhere near this $40 discrepancy in favor of the 460.

However, 460 768MB are almost the same price than 5770s 1GB (~150€ for 460 vs ~140€ for 5770)

Same here, the 6850 is much cheaper than the 460 1GB. Seems like its only in the states where the 460 is cheaper.

So if you have ~$200, need to buy from newegg with no rebates, which card would you pick?

I would go with the 460 1gig. The 6850 seems to be at or above MSRP with no discount or rebates.

There are some 460 1gig with 10% off coupon code on top of the listing.

This is def the best bang for the buck right now

5850 for $155 after MIR
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814127500

WTF!!! A $100 rebate. I did not see that, but would never guess they would offer a $100 rebate.
But becareful I have heard of problems with MSI and rebates. That and for $100 I would make copies of everything... twice. :awe:

EDIT:
I tried the 10% off ,some, video cards code, BTEZZZS32, and it did not work.

I was about to get mad at ya as I just got a GTS450 this week. If I could have got a 5850 for $130 I would have been all over that.

I've never done a rebate without doing copies/not tracking it.

what coupon code?

There was a 10% that worked for everycard I tried but it experired.
The new code, BTEZZZS32 , works on some cards. It might say "use code..." on top of the listing and some it does nto but still works.

I got my GTS450 for $90 AR using the old code. I was leaning toward the GTX460 1gig btu the one I wanted was out of stock and I did not see a $100 rebate on the 5850... damm. :awe:

EDIT
Like this...

10% off w/ promo code BTEZZZS32, ends 11/21

Just tried 4 GTX460 1gig cards and it did nto work. I think there are some 768mg ones that the code will work for. But after rebate the 1gig still come out better in the bang for your buck area.

Pending game/s & monitor resolution.

But, I'm bias since I own a GTX460 that I have successfully clocked @ 1000++ MHz.
