what card to get... since my radeon 64ddr wont work on my pc?

hmm I had the same sort of problem with my diamond (forgot the kind) card and my MSI 6321 dual setup. I finally fixed the problem by switching off AGP 4x to 2x. Thats too bad you can do it on your dell.

I had the same problem on my pc with a 32mb Radeon on Win98. I took it back to TCWO where I bought it and jonyGURU the ranting tech found out that it did the same thing on his test machine with Win98 SE but it worked perfectly under WinME. I had just built my machine so it had a new hdd and a fresh instalation of windows with all the updates from MS.

Get the WHQL drivers from M$, they are the latest and the most stable. (7041) and read the radeon guide at Rage3d.

I forgot how but there is a way to find out the unique BIOS id
of the motherboard in the 4100. I think it is made by Intel.

I did a quick check on the Dell 4100 and there are about
800 posts concerning problems with freezing or hanging
with new hardware and the 4100.

Was not aware of any tweaked 7041's. Failed to locate link at rageunderground for radeon drivers. 7041 link at rage3d downloads from Microsoft. Are they really tweaked or just packaged differently?

taz, im downloading the file you listed, there the latest drivers for the radeon right?
and, i need to uninstall my voodoo drivers before i try to get my radeon to work again, is just the uninstall good enough? or what should i look for in the registry? im not formatting again, ive done it about 2 or 3 times this week...

Make sure you change the reg setting I noted and get rid of ALL old driver refs from the registry and your HS. Delete the drvdata.bin and drvidx.bin files as well.

my vote goes to getting rid of the radeon because of weak drivers and game compatability. I have had allot of wierd things happen that have happened to others on ati message boards and this is one of those things that stands out. I think their card is new and its up to ati to get ahead of the game and get on top of peoples issues. For me I had countless problems with games either conflicting with driver settings, not booting at all, wierd crashes, bad performance, etc.

My system was a abit kt7 mboard now im with the msi proa2 and I would get the same wierd things happening with fresh win98se installs going step by step setting up my system with no overclocking and it was just too many things to put up with. So I had my geforce ddr card, the radeon 64mb retail, and just got a voodoo 5500, and Im keeping the 5500. I know about 3dfx but for now the card is playing games fine, maybe not as fast in every case as some other cards but they aren't giving me as many headaches, and I have about 50 pc games in my rotation and am constantly buying new stuff.

One of the biggest things that stood out for me with radeon is everquest. I would almost say without a doubt this game would crash every 20 minutes with the radeon. It hasn't happened since with the other cards.

hhaha then you must be doing something wrong. Cuz this card haven't given me any trouble. And you must be doing something really wrong if you can't get the Geforce card to work either.

oops I didn't mean to say the geforce was bad. I was just in the market for a new card and started with the radeon, had the geforce and ended with the voodoo 5500 due to the way real world games play. I almost guarantee nobody can beat the number of hours my computer is used to play games. I work for a few hours/day from home and have the rest of the day to screw around and live with my cousin who is practically on the computer all hours Im not. He likes everquest and some different types of games than me. Im constantly playing games beating them then selling them off or going online with stuff like unreal, quake, etc. for multiplayer stuff. I also have a lan here.

I would say its pretty easy to do clean installs with systems to make sure nothing is left over and start from scratch with different driver versions then testing out gaming situations, but I also know certain configurations may just be one of those things. For all I know even though I use quality name brand parts some wierd setting could cause issues, etc.

But I spent a couple weeks pounding these cards in different rigs swapping stuff out and came to my own conclusion. We all know somebody is going to be the exception to the rule. But I must say after my experiences and dealing with current driver versions and game releases radeon sticks out like a sore thumb. Maybe the other guys have had more time to develop drivers, maybe certain game makers could alleviate troubles through patches that haven't or won't come, etc. but I don't care about that stuff and what the potential is for a card. I like real world performance not spec sheets and somebody who plays 5 games, says they run great and claim a certain card or whatever is the best thing.

I can only go by what I see and out of the box with current drivers I want the most compatable card so I can boot my games and atleast play through them with a clean display and thats why my choice is the voodoo 5500, and I would pick the geforce over the radeon, which I will not have anything to do with again. Im gonna put it in the for sale forum soon, and move my geforce card goes into a lan computer. I'll keep the voodoo card until the nv20 comes out and re evaluate.
