if it was in india then try 7 cents an hour. and it was lightning striking a hydro-power station in the niagra falls area according the canandians.

Hypothesis: The lightnig struck a hydro-power station causing a chain raction of overloads in the niagra falls generating grid which shut down that area of the pacific grid as it is supposed to in such a situation. However it didn't balance due to th massive draw of the many many airconditioners that were all on.

All right, you just crossed the line buddy. Hand over that fake license and passport I got you in with from Mexico and I'm sending you back hehe j/k

Seriously, India has some of the best engineers... as for labor, go to china

Taiwan is actually about 3 or 4 grand a year a cheaper for engineers and 2 to 3 for the facotry workers right now. Dam free-trade zone is killing our chinese labor sources.

my power in fort erie, ontario (20 km south of niagara falls) comes directly off of those generators, and the most we experienced here was a 5 second brownout at 4:15 because of all the distribution havoc that was being wreaked at the time. plus it was a sunny day.

Yes, it would be nice to go through the night without riots and/or deaths.

The Canadians like to blame the US though...
One possibility was a lightning strike in the Niagara region on the U.S. side of the border, according to the Canadian Department of National Defense. A spokeswoman for the Niagara-Mohawk power grid said the cause was still unknown, but that it was not a lightning strike.

A spokesman for the Canadian prime minister's office said the cause was a fire at a Con Edison power plant in New York.

Canadian Defense Minister John McCallum blamed an outage at a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, but the state's Emergency Management Agency said there had been no problems at any of the state's five nuclear plants and that all were operating normally.
I like how every paragraph starts with the Canadians blaming some US site...yet none are substantiated and 2 are even refuted.

I bet it was those damn shifty moose.

Funny, 'cause the U.S. is blaming Canada too! lol. It's nice to know how the first instinct is to blame someone else. Why don't they just admit that we're sharing power and all of us were consuming too much. You've got Toronto, Ottawa, NY city, Detroit, Montreal, and some others all on the same grid. That's insane. There needs to be a new system in place. It will only get worse over the years.

it's weird that we have routers on the internet that can automatically route traffic when one path goes down, yet our power system is so antiquated that if there is one failure, it causes several states to lose power for HOURS?

call me confused, and really fvcking frustrated that i got stuck in the bullsh!t.:|

It is antiquated. However... it should not have all gone down because of one failure. I suspect the massive overloads that have been placed on the power plants lately are the main cause of it all.

As for me... I have a tractor driven generator on my farm... On one tank of fuel, the tractor could probably power the generator for 18-24 hours (average load; full load would prolly be 12-18 hours)... and I also have a bulk diesel fuel tank that has enough fuel in it to refill the tractor tank 20 times.

I'm set!

The system is down, yo.

Somebody tried to cram some swiss cake rolls into the disk drive of the master power server.

i was 7 in 1965

i thought that this was not supposed to happen again. :|

They need to put the hydro power plants back online,
and build more of the small ones,
we have a lot of small waterfalls that could be used for hydro power, that are Not being used

more solar power with battery backup too.

I would really like to know why you guys across the ocean fail to manage your power. I cannot even remember having a power outage ever (well yeah once for a few minutes when I was a child, but that was when we still had communism here in the East).

So how come your power companies fail to provide the power by demand? Or is it that Americans excessively waste power that power companies cannot keep up with building power plants? Or maybe electricity is too cheap over there and that is why eveybody goes overboard with those A/Cs - overloading the momentary capacity of the electricity production?

Ah well at least you guys are used to those things, I would have freaked out...

We go overboard in N.America. Especially businesses. The big ass companies are the real ones to blame. They should publish reports showing which companies use the most. They always seem to want to blame regular people, but they rarely blame the big factories or plants or corporate buildings.

On the radio, they were saying that it was possible that a <gasp!> hacker could've done it.
