EDIT: Ok, it seems like im semi-alone here... if you dont agree, can you offer an explanation as to what is wrong with them? or if you ARE one of them, tell me why you act the way you do.

EDIT: This discussion has turned from my anti-MTV standpoint to why people do what they do.

Saying things like that makes you look like a fool. I don't even think I need to point out why. How old are you? 60? "these damn kids these days - no respect for their elders!!"

Nope, sorry I don't agree. I defintely do blame them for Britney Spears and N'Sync(and Ricky Martin) which in my opinion is much, much worse.

>>As soon as the early 80's came, the youth all the sudden decided to lash out at everything in every way possible

Uh.. if MTV caused all this rebellion now, whose fault was the 60's?

I don't think MTV is responsible for the youth's hatefulness towards their parents or their lack of respect. I think MTV is responsible for killing individuality in a lot of cases and I think that MTV capitalizes on some youths that are so naive.

However, I'm the same guy who said with enough porn, there will be less homosexuality.

I don't agree with you at all. Sure I hate MTV but because the music stinks. People need to stop blaming TV and the media for problems and start blaming themselves. Take some responsibility for your own actions instead of pushing it off on someone else. If parents paid more attention to their kids, maybe the kids wouldn't have as many problems? If parents taught their kids respect, maybe they would have some for each other. Maybe if kids were given consequences for their wrong actions, they would think before they did something wrong. True, there are some people who are just messed up but not because of MTV. Also, what is wrong about people wearing what they want? Maybe they don't want to look like everyone else. I wear chains, spikes, band t-shirts because I like them and because I just can't stand looking like everyone else,it's boring. Yet I don't do drugs or drink, I respect other people and myself, I have alot of freinds, and I get along great with my parents. Maybe you should stop stereo-typing people by what they look like and get to know them first.

What I can't figure out is whats up w/ the baggy pants and boxer shorts w/ your ass practically hanging out? In my day that would be asking for a world class beating.

I wasn't even born in the 60's but weren't they lashing out too?

Sure the circumstances were different but rebellion is a youthful instinct. The instinct to define oneself when you are just starting to understand and learn about the world.

People tend to mellow out as they get older. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

<< stupid goth outfits >>

i take personal offence to that. i do not watch MTV or Much Music, as i despise the music they play. blaming media and the like for how people act these days is an easy way out. it's always easy to dump the blame on someone else without actually thinking it through. i suppose that you think Marilyn Manson(or however you spell his name) was at fault for it, just because the kids listened to his music, right? if you do i feel extremely sorry for you kids if you have any. the people at fault are the people themselves, and at times, their parents, but not the media.

How about this, where the hell did boys learn to start wearing makeup and wearing leather with spikes? because you like it? something MUST have driven you to do that. I dont really think one day you woke up and said "Hmm... I think i'll wear some spikes to school today" or "saftey pins look good on my jacket" I would like to know what it was. any explanation besides "i like them?"

lol@Skoorb

you're soo right who else did they blame? KMFDM, Metallica, Ramstein, Manson, and there were a few more, right? oh, and we can't wear trenchcoats anymore, or dye your hair, have piercings unless you're a girl etc.(not at my school, but a lot of schools where my friends go are like that) all because people believe everything they read and don't think for themselves. quite sad if you ask me

They wore wigs with lots of foundation and fluffy collars during the Renaissance.

It's just style man. It comes and goes. People want to try and distinguish themselves. Nothing bad about it.

first thing, i don't wear makeup or leather or spikes. second, if i did, i would because i found them aesthetically pleasing, not because i think they're 'cool' or because it'll piss off my teachers or parents. secondly, what business is it of yours to care what people wear? if it bothers you, don't look. if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Intake77: I was just sick of trying to fit in with the footall players by buying expensive clothes, trying to act cool, denying that I liked art and computers, and playing sports that I had no desire to play. Finally I said "screw it, this isn't me, I like art and computers". I started to wear what I wanted to wear, instead of trying to look like everyone else. I finally stopped looking in mirror and worrying about how much I weighed or if my shirt looked just right. I feel good about myself and that's what matters.

go freak-o-l-a! i know what you mean. i like my music, not whatever happens to be in the top 10, i dress in such a way which makes me comfortable, and i think what i want, not what others expect me to. some people are just too insecure to grasp that i guess

freak:
Ok that is a reasonable explanation, and Im glad you feel good about yourself, except why did you choose what you chose? Im just looking for the driving force behind some of the decisions that youths make.

Any trend of anger and disrepect in kids is IMO just a reflection of anger and hate in ourselves. If we want kids to be respectful of us and be good people, the best thing we can do is be good people ourselves and give teenagers and kids the respect they deserve.

Raspewtin,
that was one of the most insitful comments i have ever heard (and im not saying that as a jerk, im saying it because it was wonderfully put). Do you think that Divorce has a large impact on children even if they act like it dosent bother them?
