I don't know why I chose what I did, it was just what I pictured myself as. I had never pictured myself as a sports star but because that was what was popular in my school I did it, even though I never liked it. After I got fed up with trying to fit in, I dressed the way I pictured myself. Being artistic, I found it more pleasing to look different and defy convention, kind of like using myself as a one big canvas.

BTW Raspewtin, that was very well put, I couldn't have said it better myself. I totally agree with you.

I think MTV was the result. One of them at least. I dress the way I do because I wanted to. I don't want to look like everyone else. I also had piercings before they got trendy(in my area). woo. Why should I go out and look and act like a "good child" when I wouldn't be comfortable and not like myself? Respect me for me, not for what you want me to be.

im still young, 19, you know why kids do it?

cause they can.

people look everwhere to blame, when the problem could be that kids are home alone and parents stuck at meetings...maybe the parents cant be there but thats why, bc parents arent raising them right.

and those who say, obviously you dont have kids, well i watched violent shows and clothes, and blah blah.

a little thinking also tells one right from wrong, kinda like left from right.
people do what they want. sad tho that everyone blames everything else before they blame theirselves.

my 2 cents. coupons? what coupons?

MTV is mindless drivel that panders to the 30 second attention span of those with no imagination.
MTV is a seemless blend of marketing and advertising - from the videos promoting music label's sales, to ads for products.
MTV shows very few vidoes these days, choosing instead programming that tries to be edgy in a marketing focus group kind of way.

But MTV isn't causing anything - it just panders and sets/promotes trends. Kids are rebellios, arrogant, lazy... what have you (BTW, I'm only 24 myself, not old either) because they are kids. We were all like that in one form or another. Call it hormones meet sleep requirements that are beyond what we get.

Teenagers were rebelling LONG before MTV, TV, radio, or bobby socks!

Nah Deeko. I was just saying men wore makeup hundreds of years ago. It's not something new. Lots of cultures use face paints.

But it wouldn't shock me too see people dressed up like it's the Renaissance. Look at Prince (or whatever his name is).

I don't know what the pop culture dress like now. It's always changing.

Intake:

I think you are asking too much. Most of the teenagers I talk to have no clue, primarily because they have no perspective. Their needs and wants are vacuous compared to our own.

It's not their fault. I think it's the generations that raised them. Not enough time has been invested in their upbringings from the very start. I believe much of this is the cause of 2 income families and the Wife no longer staying at home raising the children. This has caused a total breakdown in the Mom network that was very effective at keeping kids in line and educating them about certain morales and realities.

However, I think this may be changing for the better as families are now realizing how important it is to have at least 1 parent home most of the time.

No one has yet to explain the baggy pants thing to me...

What kind of baggy pants are you talking about? I wear Structure and American Eagle, they would be defined as baggy, but they are more 'preppy' jeans. You are probably referring to huge jeans like jnco and such. Most people don't wear that kinda stuff. At my school, only like the ultra-hardcore weirdos wear it.

Doggiedog, at my school, most of like the 'popular' kids wear more of a preppy look, along with the 'althetic' look(nike and such). That's pretty much it...there is no like 'set' style today. It can vary greatly from school to school even.

I totally agree with that. my mother ran a daycare out of our house and was therefore home all the time for me. Divorce and 2 working parents has lead kids to take care of themselves or a babysitter. In a way, I think my mother may have contributed in the disrespect in todays kids... but also helped me out. kinda weird.

As for the baggy pants, I think its because they forget to wipe and they are airing out... (oh thats not right....and a joke as well)

If you're from the 70's, explain to me the bell bottoms, afros, and funky colors. If you're from the 80's...well... explain the whole damn fashion scene please

I'm from the 80's. I guess the preppy and jock look never wore out since that was the majority back then. We wore baggy pants back then too but we tended to roll up the ankles a bit.

As for girls, did you ever see early Madonna with the frizzy hair? That's what girls wore (eww!) It looks hilarious now when going back to our yearbooks!

lol the 80's were my stomping grounds...sigh... BTW, how do you dress 80's? The Miami Vice look? Pastels? That stupid Michael Jackson jacket? The Wedding Singer movie brought back memories...

Anyway, I hope we don't become a society that FEARS our children. We should always love, nurture, listen and even try to understand them no matter how they drive us crazy. But as a Parent you should not become their friends. They have other ppl for that. I am not my Son's friend. I am his FATHER and I am not hesitant to be like one.

Our children are the future. Since I believe that all ppl are basically good, I think they too will be good adults. At that point they will have made our mistakes, and lived through some of the perspectives I have now. And they will get on a forum and write 'What causes kids to do the things they do?' And I will laugh as I respond to it w/ my cyber implant PC model 2030 XL...

Techie,
good reply

There is not any ONE thing that can explain a whole generation.

As for those who discount the media and say it's all dependent upon good parenting, you're wrong. It takes a whole community to properly raise a child. Even with the best parents, kids go outside the home everyday and encounter the real world. The real world, no MTV pun intended, is what the rest of us are responsible for, including what we allow to be in the media.

How many of you grown ups(which includes me) did everything your parents asked/demanded/expected? I had great parents. But I still went out and got wasted behind their backs, caused vandalism, stole once in a while, jacked off everytime I saw some cleavage, etc. etc., and it had nothing to do with what my parents did. It was because of who I was. Don't expect that your kids, or other kids will do everything great if the parents are great at parenting. They still have friends and other influences(media), and if you don't think that friends influence them more than parents then you're out of touch with reality.

I personally don't like the way censorship has been relaxed. If you think that it goes against freedom of speech, think about how we have always live with some level of censorship, and think what it would be like if there were none, would you accept that for your own children?

my 3 cents

Just to let everyone know where my rants/questions came from... here goes:

Im a guy who has a descent job. Ive been with my girlfriend for 2+ years now and will be marrying her within the next 2. For some reason, when I was at the mall yesterday shopping for gifts, everyone that I looked at confused me, with the exception of the myself and the guy standing next to me (my buddy steve). The mall i went to had a plethora of different sights, from the gothic, to the jock, to the (pardon the expression) trailer trash, to the hip-hoppers. And they all confused the heck outta me. Confused and scared me. Scared me as to what my children will turn out to be... If i would be able to raise them... If MTV was the cause of this...

I apoligize if i sounded harsh in some of my previous posts sometimes im not the best at getting my words out (my girlfriend tells me that all the time), and Im glad that I got to hear all the sides (well, most of them) of this.
