What causes that smell when you're done tanning?

Like if you go tanning, you smell "different" getting out.

It's not sweat, or BO.

What is it?

Getting out as in, "out of the tanning bin"? Most likely, that is the smell of singed leather, emanating from your wallet.

Of course, you realize that artificial tanning carries a higher risk of skin cancer than tanning under natural sunlight.

It used to be that way, but nowadays I believe the opposite is actually true. I think you have a higher risk of getting cancer from the sun than from a booth b/c they take out some of the harmful rays.

The correct answer is Ozone. UV creates ozone.

Anyway, why anybody would willingly subject themselves to energy from the electromagnetic spectrum that is carcinogenic is beyond me.

All UV light is "harmful". Why do you think it causes the tanning reaction in the first place? It is your skin trying to protect itself.

I'd agree, but I usually binge drink 20+ drinks every Saturday night and I know that isn't good for me!

i do it because i think a tanned look is more attractive and i don't really fear that a tanning bed is going to give me cancer

It outright doubles your risk. Do you also play the lottery?

I take a risk everytime I go into the sunlight or even get into my car to drive around. Life is all about weighing risks vs benefit from a personal point of view. Note: I don't use a tanning booth

We have an old school UV illuminator (260nm i think, maybe slightly more) and we use it to light-up ethidum bromide that attaches itwelf to DNA. Anyways this girl was cutting a band out of an agarose gel and "forgot" to put on UV goggles and a long-sleeve t-shirt (labcoat) and when we saw her the next day, it was a mix of comedy and horror. Her eyes were blood-red and she blinked constantly, one of her arms ewre red from "sunburn" from the source. Ionizing radiation is not to be messed with, pyrmidine dimers cause serius problems in transcription and replication.

Oh, I should also add that if the UVA isn't enough, ozone is carcinogenic too.

If you morons are so GD worried about what looks good, take a look at the skin of a 30 year old sun worshipper. Take a look at their skin that is never exposed to the sun. Now, tell me what looks better. Of course, I suppose some people like that mottled, parched leather look...
