Skylake. I was an AMD guy, switched to an E8400, that machine died, ended up going Mac in 2010, finally got an i3 and built a real computer again last year and swapped it out for my i7 this year. Never looking back.

i7 920 Nehalem was the first i7 CPU I had, now I've got a 4820k Ivy Bridge E now.

The i7-6700k is my first i7 and my first Intel purchase in many years. I don't by cpu's often. The last two were an Athlon XP 3000 and when that system died my current Phenom 2 965 was built. My hope is the i7 meets or exceeds the longevity that my previous builds had. I believe it will.

I7-920 D0 got me into a water for the 4.2 OC , then a full block for the X58 evga , then blocks for the gtx 580's when they came out.
gave it to a buds son when I moved to a 3770 , who ran it until he picked up a 4790.
if memory serves me right , people whined at the x58 board prices because of intels high spec's but it turn out to be a strong platform imo

This. I got my D0 for $200 at Microcenter. That was a deal. The P6T Deluxe v2 was not at $289. However, they are both still chugging along doing duty in my HTPC.

I'd run AMD from the Thunderbird until the Phenom II gen, then went i7 with a 4770K.

I still have never purchased an i7 desktop CPU, although my laptop has one of those quad-core "mobiles" with Iris Pro graphics.

Never had an i7.
I went from a q9550 @ 4.0 to a i3 6100 @ 4.5 .

I've been using EX58-UD3Rs (in various revisions) with all my i7 920s.
Cost was reasonable (around ~$150 IINM) and it didn't feel like a cut down mobo (obvious features aside, eg. 4x RAM slots) compared to consumer mobos such as the Z170 Pro4S.

Still running fine after 7 years together with the 920 at a relative's place, still the same 4GHz+ OC with no degradation.
