I know its kind of a stupid question, but I'm strongly considering relocating from Chicago to another area for a while and I'm curious as to what rent and mortgages are like in other states, cities, etc.

Grand Prairie, TX (suburb of Dallas)

1800 sqft home built 1981, $106K. My mortgage is low because I don't have PMI or escrow, so I'm paying <$600 a month, but I pay my property taxes and insurance outside the mortgage payments.

building a 5000sq ft house for 243K. Mortgage will be about $1500/month on a thirty year note or 1950/month on a 15 year note. Not sure which one I will take.

BTW, while house is being built, we're living in a 1200sqft apartment for $1200/month. Go figure. God, I can't wait till my house is done.

Take a look at Rent.net and Realtor.com.

If you are going to buy, make sure you look at property taxes and costs for electric, water, sewer, fuel oil and so on.
My mortgage is paid off and I still pay ~$550/month just in property taxes.
The electric rates here are also just about the highest in the country.

Near Cedar Rapids, IA.

$800 a month mortgage for 3br, 2ba, 1554 sq/ft townhouse. That amount doesn't include my PMI or property tax and home owners insurance escrow. I'm looking to refinace to drop it down to about $620 a month.

Before we bought the house, I was paying $610 a month rent for a 2br, 700 sq/ft condo.

[edi]Property taxes came in at ~$1300 a year.

1 bedroom apt thats around 700 sq ft. I pay $725 for rent. Denver SUCKS for housing :|

I wanted to buy a house but I realized the current market is high prices with low interest rates. Thats really only good for people looking to refinance. Better to buy at a lower price with higher rate then refinance when rates go down. Rates changes, your loan amount doesn't

I'm just outside of Atlanta and have a mortgage a bit over $1000/mo for a 1400 sq/ft brick ranch on 0.25 acre lot. Atlanta is like any other big city where homes get exponentially more expensive as you move closer in, although there are "developing" areas (read: used to be the ghetto, but are turning around) that are still bargains, but will be a bit rough for a few years to come. Overall cost of living is pretty reasonable for such a big city.

OT- According to my boss (who is from Chicago) our traffic here hasn't gotten as bad as yours yet. We're trying tho.

Ummmm Shiva, you do realize that the longer you wait the more it will cost. Home prices don't go down unless the area goes or is going to sh!t. Those high prices you speak of will only get higher.

Ross, I live 25 minutes south of Cedar Rapids, and 10 minutes north west of Iowa City. CR has a metro area of around 180,000. Iowa City has a population of around 80,000. When I moved here a little over two years ago, unemployment was at .02%. Yes, two hundreths of a percent. It's gone up some since then, but it is still much, much lower than the national average.

Insurance, financial, and medical industries are very easy to hop into. IT has dried up a bit, but there's still quite a few jobs listed.

I live in Alabama (I wasn't born here but moved here).

I rent a 1034 sqft 2 bedroom 2nd (top) floor apartment that was built in 1999. I pay $540/mo.

The wife hates it(we live in the middle of nowhere), but I love it(cost of living is so low)!
