What could be the problem?

I recently got the 10mbps/2mpbs FIOS connection, but am getting varying speed tests and I have no idea why. Over at speedtest.net, I'll get about 10mpbs/1.8mpbs on an older Macbook (2005 model), but on my Acer 4620Z, I get about 1.5mpbs/1mpbs, and on my desktop(using Asus P5K-E Wifi AP to connect wirelessly), I get about 4.8mpbs/1.5mpbs. All connections are wireless and I don't understand why there's such a big difference for each computer. Any ideas?

I'd start with that being your reason. Can you connect each Host via a Wired LAN and see if your bandwidth tests even out?

I've tried connecting the Acer directly, but the speeds were still the same. There's no way I can connect the desktop though since the router is too far away.

What OS is the Acer? Otherwise the varying and slow speeds you're getting are completely normal for wireless. You can try changing channels to 1, 6, 11 to see what works best.

You want to find the extend of your Wireless performence?
Put the computer next to the Wireless Router and measure LAN File transfer.

Speakeasy is Not a measure for Wireless or any LAN performance.

The speeds that you get are good enough for good Internet surfing.

You need to be engaged in professional work that needs more Speed use Wire.

Acer is running XP. I'll try changing the channels to see if that does anything.

And Jack, I know the speeds are "good enough", but I'm not satisfied with "good enough" when I'm paying good money for "better" you know? Not to mention, it's annoying the hell out of me not knowing why the speeds vary so much.

As i said first step measure as a pro the real transfer between tyhe computers and the Router.

speedtest.net is a gimmick Not a tool to measure LAN transfer.
