Well that really depends on what you plan to do with your system.

If you're just web browsing, light gaming, watching the occasional movie, go with an entry-level Core2Duo.

If you need a little bit more power for heavier gaming or other intensive tasks, go with a higher-end Core2Duo.

If you run a lot of multithreaded applications and are willing to spend the money, get a Q6600.

I think the E6550 and up would probably be the range of CPUs we're talking here. A lot comes down to how much you want to overclock, how much to spend, and how intense you'll push the CPU. Care to give a sample of what you play for a better guessing range?

Here is Supported CPU List. If you already have the board, E4600 (2.4GHz) is a good choice. Otherwise you'd better consider a newer motherboard supporting 45 nm processors.

The q6600 is fine, also it has a lot of headroom for overclocking especially if you get the g0 stepping since it runs cooler than the b3. I forget if ETQW is already optimized for multiple cores or not but in any case it's a good CPU on it's own, however if all you plan on doing is gaming and movies then a higher end dual core should do very well such as the e6850. Otherwise you should listen to what renethx and bigblockchevy said and start looking at motherboards that can support 45nm processors if you plan on gaming heavily in the future since you'll be able to change the processor without completely overhauling your system.
