What cpu runs the hotest no-matter what HS/FAN

Athlon XP no question will run the hottest. Any copper base heatsink on that page should do the trick. You might want to look at Thermalright heatsinks too.

IIRC the Thunderbird Athlon 1.4ghz ran the hottest out of all modern CPUs. Might have changed with the latest 3ghz+ processors from Intel and AMD upcoming. Anyway the GC68 for $5.99 at www.svc.com is a pretty good hs/f at your price point.

The hottest mainstream CPU that's currently out there would be a 3.06 GHz P4 which, IIRC has a max power dissipation of over 100 watts.

i beilieve that the T-bird 1.4 runs hotter than any of the XP's. any decent copper bottom heatsink and fan should do for it, though.

Yeah, it's all about the power dissipation when you're talking about heat. Which the P4 3.06 now holds the crown for.

the mechanical interface between the CPU and the heatsink is also important. the 3.06 has a high heat output, but it's heatspreader and large surface area means that it runs cooler than the heat output suggests.

Athlon XP, they are also renowned for burning instead of crashing, somewhere out there there is a video of an intel P2, P4 and an Athlon, the P2 Crashes, The P4 is barely affected and the AMD sets on fire and burns, that is of course with no heatsink

According to Tom's hardware, the 3.06 P4 dissipates 82watts. Link. What is not clear is if this is with HT enabled or not. Anand had the 3.06 P4 running hotter by 6.5% under HT, compared to non HT mode. link.

In contrast, An AThlon XP 2800+, at 2.25 ghz has dissipates around 75-76watts of heat. link. So, there's a difference of around 6watts. Is it a 'fairly large margin'? No. The large margin is the almost 800mhz faster clock speed of the P4. So, considering the higher clocked speed, the P4 runs cool by XP standards. The old barn-burner Athlon 1.4ghz cranks out almost the same heat as the XP 2800+.

Your really kinda stretching if you want a decently low temp for UNDER $20, just peek above that limit for a minute and get the thermaltake 7+ and that'll cool the hottest amd down to a nice balmy 50c. I'm looking at getting the Vantec Aeroflow for my new rig cause it's the first heatsink I've seen in a while with any real innovation in design. Not to mention it's heat dissipation to wieght ration blows a lot of those solid copper heatsinks out of the water.

Come on MAC what you talking about,if a rooms temp is 130 degrees F it dosen't mater where you put the diode.
Boy it would be nice if people think once in a while.Most AMD MB,s heat sensor probe are appox 1/16 inch underneath the CPU maken it a ballpark figure of the true temp.
