Samsung and Viewsonic are probably the only two brands that I know out of those that make reputable monitors.

MAG is somewhat new to the market (I think, I've only seen their name appear recently) and I've never seen Phillips/LG make a CRT before.

I'd probably go with the Samsung.

Pretty much, I'd go NEC > Samsung > Viewsonic > Sony > * though.

No way! Sony>all. Sony pioneered and invented Trinitron. NEC/Mitsu DiamondTron is very good but it wouldn't have been possible without the Trinitron. Only reason DiamondTron exist is because Sony's patent on Trinitron expired and other companies were able to copy it. ViewSonic adapted DiamondTron and called their technology PerfectFlat. The biggest difference between Trinitron and DiamondTron is that Sony uses three electron guns for the three RGB colors and Mitsu only uses one.

It's unfortunate that Sony no longer produces Trinitron CRT but their decision was forced by economics. IMO, quality control on CRT monitors in general has declined in recent years as companies outsource and cut corners on the manufacture process.

The best CRT imo was the Sony FW900 24" CRT widescreen monitor. I would love to get my hand on one of these for a decent price but finding a nice used one is extremely difficult.

Because I can't go with Sony these days I'd probably go with Viewsonic.

Samsung generally gets rated better on the lcd front as their lcd's are good for gaming due to better frame refresh than most.
On CRT I'd go Mitsubishi or Viewsonic. Its really the model more than the company tho. Go see them at a Circuit City or Best Buy(or whatever big Retailer is near) if you can. Mention after tlaking for a bit you might buy it online if its much cheaper and see if they will pricematch. Never hurts to ask.
Sony had some excellent sets but also some real duds. The QC has been bad at Sony for the past few years.
Dont take my word for it tho check the reviews from owners. You'll see alot of 5s and more than a minimum of 2's due to folks RMA'ing them.

MAG and LG are not new monitor manufactures. They've been making CRTs for awhile.

That Mag is nice Diamondtron monitor with max refresh rate of 1600x1200 @ 76Hz.

LG F700P uses Flatron tube which is a cross between Trinitron and Shadow Mask. It's max refresh rate is 1600x1200 @ 75Hz.

Samsung 793DF uses DynaFlat tube which is Samsung's version of Flatron. It's max resolution is rather low at 1280x1024 @ 65Hz. But 17" CRT users rarely use anything above 1024x768 so it's probably ok, but I would be uncomfortable gaming on that monitor at 1280x1024.

Viewsonic P75F+ uses Viewsonic PerfectFlat tube which like I said is ViewSonic's own adaptation of DiamondTron. It's max resolution is 1792x1344 @ 69Hz and has 1600x1200 @77Hz.

I've never used any of these monitors but based on specs alone, I would rule out the Samsung as it has the worst specs of the bunch. LG Flatron is nice but I prefer Aperture Grill tube like the DiamondTron or PerfectFlat. So I would probably go with either that MAG 796FD2 DiamondTron or the ViewSonic P75F+.
