I think that if people don't consciously learn to chew with the mouth closed, they naturally chew with the mouth open.

So it's not so much that Asian cultures encourage chewing with the mouth open, it's what it is by default without consciously trying to stay away from that.

Seriously. Why don't people realize people have different customs and do things in ways that seem polite to them?

Because some "customs" are disgusting and don't deserve respect. I'm sure it's ok to take a giant shit in front of other people in some cultures as well. I wouldn't be ok around that, either.

Ahem. An etiquette lesson for all of you.

It is perfectly OK to speak with people at your table while you have food in your mouth. The important part is to take only small bites so that when you do speak you can do so clearly without interference from the food.

It is considered poor manners to not respond to a question or involve yourself in conversation because your mouth is too full of food to participate.

NO. I do NOT want to see bits of food in your mouth while sitting across from you at the table.

I think if you need to speak around your food at a dinner party you may be eating too quickly. It shouldn't take that long to clear the passage. But I admit to doing it too, sometimes.

I assure you, there are many things that Americans do that would be considered massively disrespectful and disgusting in other countries.

Its like how how Americans say that native asians/indians/ etc etc etc smell bad. To people of those races/ethnicity, Americans smell like shit too.

If we Americans think that BO smells bad therefore Asians/Indians think that Speed Stick, Right-Guard, Old Spice etc... smells bad?

You realize that all that crap only covers up your armpits and shit, unless you're covering every inch of your skin with that stuff. The smell comes from the sweat that your entire body produces. And what you eat is what you smell like.
You act like people of other races don't also use deodorant.

Deodorant covers up unfamiliar smells sure, but smells that you're used to and other people of the same culture are used to are imperceptible. People of other cultures WILL notice those, and it will smell disgusting.

Also shit like Axe actually DOES smell bad.

No need to get pissy. Its a commonly known stereotype that some ethnic groups don't use deodorants for health reasons and that's what we are discussing here.

The sweat produced by an armpit is far more offensive than sweat from your forehead for instance. Armpit will turn to BO far sooner than sweat from parts of the body more exposed to air that can evaporate the sweat quicker than an armpit. Places like armpit, buttcrack, feet inside shoes smell worse because of worse air circulation allowing the sweat to fester and turn to BO.

Deodorant when combined with good hygiene practices (regular bathing) still smells better than raw BO and no deodorant use.

Some people manage to be mostly odor-neutral - until an arm is raised, exposing an armpit to air that is all too willing to speedily waft unspeakable horrors toward anyone nearby.

But of course, there's the extreme in the other direction, where excessive cologne, deodorant, or perfume is used. Some people must go through the stuff by the quart. Just a quick walk-by can be enough to induce the coughing reflex.

i was an exchange student in japan for a summer and when i was there i noticed that people chewed with mouths open and slurped soup/noodles. i was told by the family i was staying with that the more noise you made as you ate, the more you showed the cook you liked the food. it was common there and after a little while, it was no big deal.

for a few weeks after i came home my family would give me all kinds of looks when we ate dinner and asked if i was 'enjoying my food' because i was being loud and chewing with my mouth open.

different strokes for different folks.
Geez.
I can't stand eating if I've got headphones on and the music stops. The sound of my own chewing, funneled right through my own head, is just nasty.

Other question: If someone's eating with someone else who didn't prepare the food, why continue chewing mouth-open? Habit? A Twitter-like attempt to broadcast, "I like what I am eating right now?"

Couple Indian dudes I work with do this as well. I can't at with them. One of them basically has his face in his plate the entire time. And, they eat basically everything with their hand. Not hands. Hand, the right one. Lefty is reserved for dookie.

Of course, my 80 year old mother in law eats this way also and she's from Arkansas.

lol

I respect certain things are different in some cultures, but when you come around this way you should respect ours as well. I guess whenever I go abroad I don't have to worry about offending anyone, except of course, when I wear deodorant.

Asians can't possibly regard Americans as smelling like shit, after spending a few decades with the French. If Americans smell like shit then the French smell like a pile of wet shit on the back of a flatbed you're following on a hot August day in Mississippi.

I don't use Axe, but some need a body deodorant like my 15 yo that has Funky Friday's every other week. You have to dress for PE, but they don't give you a shower. Dressing up counts for 10%. Sadly most kids don't dress. He is trying.

He had a bad house, now things are good here. He wants to be healthy and wants to succeed in life.

So it's moist towelettes and body spray. I admit most of the Axe lineup stinks. I am not sure the one I bought him.

Yep. Chewing with mouth open is natural. With mouth closed takes effort. In the West, it's considered rude to chew with mouth open, so it's taught at an early age not to. But not in the East. So when I visit the East and everyone is smacking their lips, grinding up food with their teeth and slurping up fluids... >> I << am the bad guy.
