Actually, I read somewhere that the term hacking comes from hacking trains, so that waht my guess is: they were busy with [modifying] their train sets. (And I'm pretty sure it wasn't in Wikipedia that I read about this, I'm pretty sure it was a magazine.)

Since working in the IT field, I've noted quite a few geeks who had train obsessions so I'm willing to buy that.
