What did I fry?

I fried one of the computers. At first, the powersupply didn't work, so I replaced it with an Ultra X-Connect 500W. It didn't fit into the old case, so I bought one of those cheap CompUSA cases. The system wouldn't turn on. So far, I know that it's not the video cardand I'm pretty sure its not the ram. I think the motherboard fried, because I don't get any beeps from the system when I run it without the RAM, or videocard. I think the motherboard was fried along with the motherboard as well. I forgot to put the heatsink on when I turned on the system. Nothing came on, but I heard a wine smelt somethign burning. Now, the system won't stay on for more than 2 seconds. What did I fry?

Should I try to fix it, or just buy a new MB, CPU, and RAM? The system is currently running a Biostar M7VIB, 2x 256MB Elixir PC2100 RAM, and an AMD Athlon XP 2200+. If I were to replace it , what should I get? The computer is only used for surfing the web (email, chat, blogs, myspace, etc.), chatting online (AIM), streaming audio/video, watching movies/listening to music, and homework (microsoft office). It's my sister's computer.

Did you mean to say "the CPU was fried along with the motherboard"? If you didn't put the heat sink back on it is sure possible that you may have damaged the processor. I would try a different CPU before buying a new mobo. See if in fact thats what it was. Maybe go from there.

After I heard the wine, and smelt somethign burning, I touched the CPU and it was cool to the touch. Is that a sign that I didn't burn it out? How fast do CPUs cool down?

I would suggest just getting a new setup, your mobo is obviously fried and the CPU could have been taken out with it. It'd only cost you maybe $130 to get a new mobo and CPU, the RAM should still be fine.

Nothing special. Maybe a 2600+ Sempron, and a mobo that will take all your hardware. Check Newegg. When checking mobos, just make sure it takes your CPU and your RAM and your hard drive. Most mobos these days have both IDE and SATA connections so you should be fine. Check the reviews on the mobos though, you don't want something that has less than 4 out of 5 eggs.

I guess I fried the CPU as well. I tried the new motherboard, and it still doesnt POST. All that happens is the fans and HSF turn on. I don't get anybeeps either. Should I go ahead and get another CPU?

Yep, I assume you got a motherboard to match the 2200+, right? So, the mobo is Socket A, right? Actually, better yet what motherboard did you get???

This might be the funniest thread I have ever seen.

How did you forget to put the heatsink on, that should be the main priority before turning it on.

Also spend a little bit more cash and get a decent motherboard and make sure it fits the form factor of your case. Good brands of motherboards are Asus, Epox, Gigabyte...etc

I would almost guarantee, from what you described, you fried the CPU. If you powered on the system without even mounting the heatsink on the CPU it could only take a matter of a second or 2 to burn it out. If you mount the CPU heatsink and just forget to plug in the fan or something, that is one thing. . .You might go a few minutes or hours depending on how ventilated the case is. But if you didn't even mount the heatsink, your CPU probably went poof.

Also, examine the chipset on the motherboard very carefully for damage as well. It sounds like something that happened to my wifes computer not long ago. It started acting funny for a while, then one time I turned it on and heard a POP and smelled an acrid smoke smell. I opened it up and examined the motherboard chipset chips very carefully and noticed there was definitely a burn mark on one of the chips and it got very hot very quickly if I tried to power on the system. Ended up just replacing the whole motherboard, memory, and CPU. . .it was time for an upgrade anyway.
