What did I get?

I picked up some ECC memory. My Motherboard does NOT like it.
Gigabyte GA8-PE667 Ultra
Gigabyte GA8-PE800 Ultra

I'm now thinking it is 512 on each side = 1 GB. Is this correct?

Here is the confusing part:
Labels tell me:
Infineon which IMO is a great PC memory maker.
HYS72D84300GBR-6-C
512MB DDR 333 CL 2.5 ECC Reg
Assembled in Portugal
370-6643
1GB DIM ECC DDR1/333 2 X 512

Individual chips:
HYB250256400CC-6
FVV37015

So this could be 1Gig of memory which is larger than my PC can handle. I'm not sure. IF you understand these labels, feel free to post and/or drop me a note.
I can also send you a jpg photo of the chips if you wish.

I have posted it on the for sale board, but I would appreciate any help to list it correctly and satisfy my own desire to know.

Thanks in advance.
Jeff

That looks like 512mb DDR1-333 modules. You have two of them, so 2 X 512 = 1 GB. (The label has 1GB/2 X 512 because it is a pair.)

Both the Gigabyte MBs you listed use an 845P chipset which doesn't support ECC memory.
Check the specs next time before you plop down your hard earned cash.

BTW, Both the MBs listed will support up to 2GBs of Non-ECC DDR.

Thanks to both of you guys.

Blain:

I read the instructiuons claiming up to 2 Gig possible, but the the instructions stop at 2 512s which equals a gig. Do I dare go for 2 sticks of 1 gig?

Again, thanks to both of you. Actually I have six sticks of the wrong stuff. :brokenheart:

Oops, sorry...
I was only looking at the chipset memory support. Your specific MB doesn't have 4 DIMM slots, only 3.
Judging by the manual, it looks like you'd be limited to 1GB of DDR (2 x 512MB double sided, in slots 1 & 2).
Make sure you use or buy "low density" modules for this MB. The 845P chipsets are picky about that.

BTW, Most cheap DIMMs sold now are "high density". "Low density" memory can be found, but costs a bit more.
Lots of ebay sellers don't know what they are selling.

Both varieties.
I have two 667s and three 800s. I was doing Grid.org some years ago. I now have 2.66 P4s with 2 single sided sticks of 256MB 333 in them. One board as 3 such sticks.

I really like my 667s because they can handle more USB items than I'll ever have active. The 800s handle the firewire stuff my sister brings over.

Ya ... that's the confusing part. Page 11 says up 2 gig but does not say how to do anything beyond 2 sticks of 512. Slot 1 will take double sided memory and the next two slots can handle single sided each or one more double sided memory. stick.
One of my systems now has a 512 DS plus two SS 256s getting me to 1 gig of 333.

Thanks again for a quick response!!

I hated the 845P chipset. It's a lot of nothing...
No ECC support
No dual channel support

Although I've never tried it, it's my understanding that you can often use ECC memory in a non-ECC-supported motherboard. You won't get ECC, but it'll boot. But that'd only be of it's unbuffered ECC memory. Registered ECC in a non-supported motherboard is definitely a no-no.

In the OP's case, it appears those modules are Registered (512MB DDR 333 CL 2.5 ECC Reg), so they won't work on an 845-chipset motherboard.

That's what I thought I had read some 5 years ago, but never tried until now. As far as my boards  not liking these sticks, my MBs are loud and clear on that point.

I got greedy.

I clicked the Crucial ad banner on this site and a SimpleTech link from Google.

Both of them claim that I can put in 1 Gig Sticks of PC2700 in my boards.
I'm really tempted to test them out.

Crucial says my [h

They say the same about my GA8-PE667 Ultra.

What makes me nervious is that Crucial said that I could install ECC memory in my GA8-IEXP, but when I tried a stick of the memory I used to start this thread, the beeper beeped ..... no chance to go to BIOS and make modifications.

Bottom line: How reliable is Crucial's compatible guarantee? Would I get a refund or a merchadise credit if it failed?
