There's always something. But being AT&T, you have a massive amount of choice. I'm on Verizon and for a non-branded phone, my choice is pretty much the S7/E, Moto's E/G/X, Nexus/Pixel and the Axon 7(with some caveats).
True, a lot more choice on AT&T. I switched not for that reason, but the fact that Verizon just sucks in Los Angeles right where I work in particular. I'm mostly in a Wifi bubble, but I could rarely use my data if I did need it. AT&T on the other hand- really strong in my work area.
While there is a wide choice on AT&T, I'm surprised that there's very little of it I'd actually consider using. I've spent a couple weeks searching for a cheap phone I'd even want to use, keeping a completely open mind. I know there's nothing like the N7, but I was just curious for something to satisfy me as 'new' for a bit until there's a flagship on the market I *really* like.
Really looking into it, I find that a huge portion of the Chinese phones aren't actually made for the US market, and so won't fully work on AT&T. (many are missing the crucial 1700 band I think it is, for LTE.) Some models that I would have snapped up as a cheap but fairly well-built knock-around, just were deal-breakers soon as I found out they won't perform fully in the US.
So far the breakdown I've run into is:
1. Phone is super-affordable (under $400) has features I want, is decent enough specs that'd be okay for the price, looks like some thought was actually put into the design of it..... ....doesn't really work in the US.
2. Phone works in the US, is affordable... ...has stats from 2014 and looks like it was designed by a blind person back in 2010. (*nothing* to recommend it over the N4 )
3. Phone has all the features I want, decent specs, looks like some thought went into the design.... .... costs $599 which is more than I'm going to put into a knock-around until an actual 'keeper' comes along.
4. (like the LeTV phones) passable specs, decent price, works in US, design I could live with... deal-breaker leaving out something crucial like the SD.
(I keep tons of my work movies and such on my phones, I take lots of videos of my kids, photos etc... SD in this day and age should be on all devices. I find it ironic, it pretty much was standard when SD card sizes were 8GB or so being a 'large' card. Now that SD sizes are up to 256GB and such- and super cheap- THAT's when manufactures drop them living out their 'everyone will stream everything' hoop dream.)
So.. Note 4 for now.
