Ive had a long history of cameras...starting from like 4 years ago. Most of these were sold as used or given away.

started with a...
-Canon S100 (first camera of that form factor)
-Nikon Coolpix 950

a few years later...i got the sub compact bug
-Canon s30
-Canon s230 <- good for just about everything
-Pentax Optio S <- favorite micro compact camera evar!

Recently Ive gotten into the ultrazoom cameras and Im contemplating between these three.
-Olympus 740UZ (defacto standard in 10x zoom cameras)
-Minolta Dimage Z1 (spaceship thingie. 10x zoom. 640x480 30fps video)
-Panasonic FZ-1 (12x zoom with optical image stablization. able to maintain F2.8 for the whole range)

Of course, the two best cameras I like at the moment are the Digital Rebel and teh FZ10 but they are above my price range.

I have a DC280 and bought it the day it came out, I wont tell you how much I paid for it. But it still works very well, nice pictures considering.

I'm testing out a Canon A60 my friend has let me borrow. It's only 2MP, yet still manages to take great pictures; here is one he took of me on the 4th of July. I liked it back then....

/keep in mind I had shorter hair 6 months ago, and retained water during the summer (still got the goatie though )

After Christmas deal time:
  • My son's birthday is December 26th. We're having a combination, New Years/Birthday party on Wednesday. It just occurred to me yesterday, that we didn't have a present for him! :Q Believe it, or not, my wife suggested a digital camera! She asked if I thought that was a good idea, and I told her, yeah, but I didn't have time to research the best deals, and get one mailed here in time. He's free to use mine whenever he wants, but for some reason, my wife seemed to think he should have his own.

Well, this morning I buckled down, and started seeing what I could put together. I was hoping to get it from Sears, then price match them later, or make them take it back, if they wouldn't price match on online retailer. After checking the best bang for the buck on cameras that matched my criteria, I settled on the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P72. I'd like to have gotten a smaller one, like the DSC-U30, but you really give up a lot for that diminutive size. The P72 has 3MP resolution and 3X zoom. It also has an AF (Auto Focus) Illuminator, and is small enough to easily fit in a pocket. We've already got an F707, so I wanted a truly pocketable camera.

Naturally, Sears didn't carry it, so I picked it up at Circuit City for $259.99. There's a $30.00 Rebate, so that brings the price down to $229.99. After I got home, I checked a few other places for price, and found Best Buy had it on their site for $242.99. I went there to make sure they had it in stock, and found that it was on their sales floor for $269.99.

I took a chance and went to CC for the price match. Only had to stand behind one person at the returns counter! I asked the CSR if the price match was doable. I showed him a printout of Best Buy's lower price in my shopping basket. He didn't even flinch, just gave me 110% of the difference, which was $18.70. That brings the total down to $211.29. That's a pretty good deal on that particular camera. Since it was purchased locally, it will be a cinch to return, if he doesn't like it.
More info:
  • Steve's Conclusion
    • The DSC-P72's images are excellent. It may be fairly small in size but there's nothing small about the 2048 x 1536 pictures that it creates and 8x10" prints that you'll be proud of. The indoor pictures of people with flash do very well and print nicely ( see Sample Photos page). The P72 is accurate even in low light conditions. The overall image quality, sharpness and color balance is on the same level as much larger and more expensive cameras with the same image resolution capabilities.
  • TechLounge Review
    • Overall this is a great digital camera. With great image quality, vivid colors, & perhaps best of all it is very easy to use, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this camera to the average user, but if you are an experienced photographer you might want to look at some other cameras with more features. In fact, a friend of mine asked for my suggestion on purchasing a digital camera and ended up purchasing this camera. Furthermore, we liked this camera so much we decided to buy a second one for ourselves. The only real problem with this camera is its tendency to produce noise in images.
  • Imaging Resource
    • I've consistently been a fan of Sony's Cyber-shot line of digicams, and regarded the previous DSC-P71 a good "midrange" option for point-and-shoot digital photography. The DSC-P72 proves just as capable, if not more so with its extended preset Scene options. The camera's light weight and portable size are perfect for travel, and the range of automatic exposure modes should handle most shooting situations well.
  • DCRP Review
    • The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P71 was a camera I recommended last year, and I like this year's DSC-P72 even more. It offers just about everything you could want in a camera: great pictures, robust performance, easy-to-use menus, a superb movie mode, and more.
  • MegaPixel Review
    • ...with this particular model, one of the most obvious changes is the camera has no noticeable shutter lag. A touch of the shutter release and the image is captured, the camera ready for the next shot: an impressive accomplishment.
  • Hardware Zone Review
    • For our indoor test shots, there was little over or under saturation of colors. Sony seems to have achieved a perfect contrast and saturation levels at automatic settings. As you can see from our indoor macro shot, there was little over saturation to the yellows and the brightness was almost perfect in spite of the lack of flash.
  • Hardware Central
    • The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P72 is small but feels good and solid. The photos turn out very good with the best quality and size I have seen in the movie mode for a digital photo camera. Very little to no shutter lag depending on your lighting conditions.

That DSC-U20 is adorable. Just had one in my hands for the first time last week. $199.00 is probably a fair price for it. Hell, you could clip it to your key chain!

I bought mine on a pricing mistake at Office Depot in 1999 or so -- paid $245 back then and sold two other cameras I bought so the end price was about zero. Thanks, OD! I wanted the DC280 but couldn't find one in stock. The DC240 takes some good pictures, but the resolution just is too low compared with the new ones. The jump to 5MP was a huge one, plus I now have a 5x zoom compared to the 3x on the Kodak. The Sony is so much better that it's not even fair to compare.
