What do I need for an OEM hard drive?

Hello,
I am planning to upgrade my current hard drive to a 40GB 7200 Seagate. I dont really want to spend 40 extra dollars on a new hard drive. Can I use my current cables and mounting bracket to install my HD? Also, is a UDMA100 HD an ATA100?

OEM HDD's are new and usually just comes with the bare drive and a lesser warranty. If that suits your needs then go for it. I buy most of my stuff OEM to save a few bucks. As far as the cable goes as long as the one you have is 80-wire you'll be ok.

I assume that your harddrive is not ata100 (same as UMDA100, just different name), yes, you can use the cable, however, depends whether it is 33 or 66 cable...i think 66 and 100 cables are the same... if it is 33 cable, i recommend you to get some ata66/100 cable instead...and you can most likely to use your mounting brackets also

you won't even need to change your cable if the the drive controller on your MB isn't of at least Ultra 66 variety. For example if you buy an Ultra 133 drive and connect it to your Ultra 33 controller....It just won't talk at anything greater Ultra 33...it always follows the least denominator has available...

If you don't want to spend extra $40, how are you going to upgrade?! Hard drives don't grow on trees. Or do you mean $40 over the OEM price?
