What do I need for HPNA home network?

A friend of mine is going to get ADSL soon.
The Telecommunications company is going to provide him with the modem.
He has 2 computers on different floors of the house and I thought HPNA would be the easiest way to share the internet connection.

What equipment (apart from the ADSL modem) is needed to share an internet connection with HPNA?

So he will need to have one computer on the whole time?

There are hpna routers, but a bit pricey. I'd go wrieless or something else before I'd invest much in that stuff.

Any chance they are providing him with a 2wire homeportal? A lot of dsl companies do, and it has homepna support built in. You would just need one other adapter then.

Does he have ethernet cards in these machines? That can affect the choice of equipment. If so, my own choice would be to buy two Netgear PE102 or two Linksys hpb200 ethernet/hpna adapters. It is not the cheapest solution, but I think it is better than getting the add-in cards, many of which seem more flakey. In any event, I'd buy at least one of these, to connect to your router; the other hpna device could then be an add-in card or a usb device.

You may be able to get stuff cheap on Ebay.

As Skyking says, wireless may be a better option. It is certainly a more popular one these days. Wireless does raise more security issues and can be problematic in some physical environments.
