What do I need to do to my rooted nexus' for the lollipop update

Pretty much as the title says. I have a nexus 4 rooted and unlocked with xposed framework installed. I guess the OTA update (when it arrives) will break the root, and probably fail to install with xposed installed. After playing around I've not found I used features enabled by rooting on my phone anywhere near as much as I did with my tablet, so am not that fussed about rerooting it post update. However I really don't want to have to do a factory image install on my phone. What do I need to do to before hitting update with my phone.

I've also got a rooted nexus 7 2012 with unlocked bootloader. Its got the xposed framework and a few modules, plus a couple of root apps installed (stickmount and titanium backup spring to mind). Its also getting slow and laggy (again) so I plan to install the factory image straight over everything. Any ideas how easy it will be to root lollipop?

it should still OTA update with root, you'll need to flash back stock recovery though.

Depending on the rooted things you use you may want to wait.

If you use Xposed Modules (it needs to be rewritten for the ART runtime) or certain custom kernels (may need to be updated to work properly with Android 5) you'll either have to to wait until those developers update them or you can skip them until they are updated.

You might want to just download the update yourself (it will be available on Google's Android site) and clean wipe your phone too. Depending on how many rooted tweaks you have done.

I've done updates with SuperSU & TWRP. However once the bootloader is unlocked then re-rooting and installing custom recovery is easy.

I would recommend not doing an OTA and downloading a clean AOSP 5.0 ROM once its released and installing that.

OTA on rooted devices can get wonky.... though it might work? I never had the balls to try

I wouldn't take chances. Use Helium to backup your stuff. Then make sure you can still boot to your bootloader so that you can install your original image in case things happen. From my experience, once you have a Google Nexus device rooted it tends to stay that way. Even if you lost root, the update often don't prevent you from getting root access again.

However, why even bother with root on a Google Nexus device? I can only think of Wi-Fi hotspotting being the app necessary to have root to circumvent phone carrier's barrier on it. Even then you can sideload/debug install that WiFi app as a root/superuser without having to continually run as root.

Also, I've always wanted to visit Nepal. How is 3G/4G up there? Not that having cellular is important in that gorgeous landscape.

As mentioned, Adaway is a good reason.

XPrivacy to stop info leaks.

GravityBox for various UI tweaks.

Changing the DPI on apps to display more stuff.

Delayed Lock for tweaking lock screen behavior.

Etc. Etc. Etc.

Yes and if you have a Nexus 4 & T-Mobile to unlock LTE too.

Display calibration.

Greenify with Xposed.

Gravitybox is amazing.

Custom kernels. Undervolting....

Tap2Wake & Tap2
Sleep. I can do what Moto X does and say Ok, Google with the screen off.

Plenty of reasons to unlock the bootloader & root.

I rely on my phone day to day, my tablet is a toy.

I've been reading lollipop reviews and quite a lot of the minor Gravitybox tweaks I use on my phone are present in lollipop. It took me a year or so to get round to rooting my phone and the main stand out points are adblock plus, app ops and a dialer blacklist. TBH I can live without them, it just makes things a bit better. The full backup is nice to have too but again not a necessity.

I intend to continue tweaking the life out of my tablet mainly because I can, and because its fun.

4G doesn't happen here. 3G is available everywhere in Kathmandu and in most built up areas, far more so than wired internet. 1 mast can service a large area, and without the existing wired infrastructure is cheaper to build that to run wiring to houses. Probably far more reliable when you see the state of wiring here anyway.

Gravitybox more or less gives many CM features to the stock rom. Along with other Xposed Modules.

Problem is Xposed won't work for Lollipop out the bat.

I updated my Nexus 7 yesterday. I unlocked the bootloader, flashed the update via adb, rooted the device and then relocked the bootloader.

I will be honest I don't even know why I rooted, just a habit I guess. Without Xposed I won't care if I lose root in a later update, as Chainfire warned:

The main question for me today is if I ROM my new watch. I think I will if I can't get all day battery with the screen on.

I did say in a previous post: "If you use Xposed Modules (it needs to be rewritten for the ART runtime."

People who use rooted apps will tend to wait till the apps catch up to the new release before updating anyways.

^ Xposed likely will never work with Lollipop. Don't get your hopes up. I get it Rovo is an amazing developer, but its important to read in between the lines. He didn't work on it partially because the final code didn't drop til now, but honestly if it was that easy to make it work on ART, he would've done it--at least any curious developer would've gotten it to work. Its not that simple.

Throw in the additional SE Linux challenges with L, I can guarantee you its not easy to implement. The developer posted a few challenges and that he likely needs additional help.

I'm gonna sit on KitKat for some time until we get some good CM12 features with a good number of features ported over. Stock Android is just too bare bones for me, although I might check it out on my N5 to see if the new features win me over.

^ That sucks! We probably won't see a good release (Stable) release of CM12 until Jan/Feb so I will do the same and upgrade my old N4 to stock lollipop in the mean time.
