What do I need?

I've never really messed with networking beyond setting up a modem and router for computers I assemble.

I am trying to help my father expand his wireless internet to his guest house. We've tried range extenders and switching routers, but the signal doesn't reach into the guest house from the main house regardless of placement. The guest house is about 25 feet from the main house.

There is a conduit running from the main house to the guest house that we could run some cording through. Could we run an ethernet cable all the way from the pc in the main house to the guest house, then use a wireless router in the guest house, or will we lose signal from the distance? The total distance of cord in the conduit would be about 45 feet.

If anyone has any suggestions or could tell me if we've got the right idea, I'd appreciate it.

Ethernet signals degrade after 100 metres or so, so it could work in your instance.

25' Wireless should work, you probably are trying to get from inside one house to inside the other directly and that rarely works.

You need to get two additional Wireless Routers and bridge them when placed on opposing Windows.

In any case if you use wire make sure that you install arrestors ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surge_arrestor ) on both sides to avoid frying the systems by lighting.

In general.

The principle is to install a Wireless Router that can act as a Wireless Bridge at the spot where there is reception at the guest house.

Then use the LAN port of the Bridge to feed the systems in the guest house via wires, or plug there a secondary Wireless Router acting as an Access Point to provide Wireless service.

Two simple Wireless Router like this (DD-WRT compatible) can help in the solution.

Thanks for the help! So I will need two routers in the guest house, one as a bridge and another as the wireless access point? I'll take a look at that tutorial.

What are you hooking into your network on the guest house? You could possibly setup something with dd-wrt/tomato with one extra router. Client bridge/repeater bridge type thing

When my father hosts family get togethers some relatives stay in the guest house. They would appreciate being able to use their laptop and kindle to stay up to date.
