What do they put in sausage that's so bad?

I keep hearing that "you don't want to know what goes into sausage" or hot dogs, but if it comes from a part of the animal, then that's extremely predictable.


Is there a Youtube video that shows what's so bad about sausage packing plants?

I'm pretty sure I don't care. Show me the cow tongues, pig testicles, and various other ends and pieces going into the grinder and I'll still take the sausage coming out of it.

I saw this at my grocery store a few weeks ago.

Beef, chicken, pork? No, VARIETY MEATS! It's a turducken of mystery.

Then make sure to read calories and then the calories from fat part.

Probably mostly a carry over from early days of the meat packing industry. See Upton Siclair's novel The Jungle. Basically rotten meat, rats, rat feces, dirt, sawdust, various appendages that workers happened to lose, etc. would go into sausage. Led to the passage of the Federal Meat Inspection Act.

You're off by about 100 years. That book was written before the FDA even existed.

My uncle worked for one back in the 80's

During and after that he never ate processed meats again. He pretty much would only do steaks, if he did a burger he would grind it himself.

Fresh sausage from the supermarket meat dept is not that bad. Different beast from hotdog and the factory packed stuff.

Friday night they scrape the floor around the meat dumpster and pile it up to make sausages on Monday morning.

Officially Sodium nitrite and BHA can be bad for your health in sufficient quantities. Of course so can what they prevent.
