What do you consider business casual?

Obviously there are sites and charts with this sort of information, but I was wondering what *you* consider business casual. I'd consider a polo/button-down with khakis or some other analogue to be business casual. I like my Dry on the Fly pants from Duluth Trading company.

I think the Midwest and South fall somewhere in the middle on this definition. I've been told that on the East Coast it's traditional to wear at least a shirt and tie. In the South this would be brutal Then there's the West Coast where I've had friends tell me they were called too stuffy on interviews because they wore a nice dress shirt.

So what are your thoughts?

In my opinion the essence of "business casual" is simply removing the coat and the tie.

Go any further and you're probably venturing into pure "nice casual".

It can vary actually depending on how companies use the term.

Strictly speaking, above is correct. Nothing less. And never jeans.

My current company's definition is that means are allowed as long as you have a dressy shirt.

Polo, khakis, clean shoes. BELT!

ALWAYS WEAR A FUCKING BELT!
For years and years I wore jeans with a polo shirt. Last year I realized that jeans were not that comfortable and in my new work position I would wear slacks. When I made the switch people started telling me that I need to wear a belt. I said F-that and started to untuck my shirt. Now now one tells me I have to wear a belt.

The company I work for originally was strict business attire. Once the switch was made to go business casual, within a few months it all fell apart. The guy in the cubical next to me wears warm-up pants, a t-shirt, and flip flops on bare feet. I still wear a nice button down shirt, but wear nice jeans with business casual shoes. There are a couple of women that wear tights that don't have the bodies for them with sweat tops and sneakers. It is pretty much a range of anything as long as your private parts are covered.

I can somewhat understand dress codes for folks who interface with customers, but otherwise as long as you're covered up, I don't see why it matters. I'd much rather they enforce things like regular showering, oral hygiene, and wearing deodorant.

Target participants in our study showed substantial differences in their behavior and even their biology as a function of the clothing change...These results suggest that high-status symbols can cause individuals to behave more dominantly — and in our role-playing negotiation, lead to higher profits and fewer concessions. Wearing low-status clothing, on the other hand, had the opposite impact.
Hygiene is of course more important.

yeah we had to pull back the casualness at our office. I blame my friend who one day decided to roll in wearing board shorts and flip flops.
