Jeans and a pocket tee aren't business casual? That's my standard attire for anything but weddings and funerals.

Silicon Valley rating system on a sliding scale from more formal to least in each category:

Formal - Tux
Business Professional - Suit & Tie, Slacks & sport coat, Slacks & button down
Business Casual - Slacks & Button Down, Chinos & Polo.
Casual - Jeans & button down, Jeans & Polo/Jeans & Sweater, Jeans & hoodie, software engineer not giving a fuck

Shine your damn shoes & wear a matching belt.

I had to look up Chinos. I used to wear jeans all of the time, but they're really not that comfortable.

Work wear for me is years-old jeans, most with holes, 10-20 year-old T-shirts in various states...and/or usually the same fleece sport pullover the entire week.

Work for you guys sounds like prison.

yeah, if I dressed UP enough to meet "business casual" standards, I'd consider myself over-dressed most of the time. I have a couple of pair of dressy slacks and sport coats...but I almost never wear them. ONCE in a while for some event at the Elks lodge, the jacket is appropriate, but MOST of the time, a nice collared shirt is the most required.

Now I've got to take a trip to DC and was told to dress at least Business Casual. I guess it's time to go drop $400 on clothes I'll wear once per year at best.

BDUs. combat boots, and a Tshirt. For dressy occasions, replace the Tshirt with a button up. Go Hawaiian for an eclectic touch.

That's the standard geographer dress code, but I'm told that DC requires fanciness. I guess I need to get over my biases about people who dress up. I assume they're making up for lack of ability and/or trying to sell me something.

Tank top, aloha shirt, ratty shorts, sandals or flip-flops. Anything else is just overdressed.

Nice shirt, no tie, nice slacks, comfy loafers.

That.

No jacket.
Button down shirt without tie, polo is too casual.
Docker/khaki style pants, clean, sharp crease. No jeans, that's too casual
Loafers or similar shoes. No sneakers or work boots.

Unfortunately us fat guys only look good in full suits or hawaiian shirts. I should just go look at pics of Bruce Campbell since we're the same height and body type.

Shorts/jeans and Tshirt that are in good condition (ex: no rips etc).

That's what I like about my job actually, I actually can wear shorts and tshirt in summer. Having to dress up would require me to have quite a hefty raise. Like I would not want to have to dress up unless I'm making 100k or more.

I picked up two pants, two jackets, three shirts, socks, and shoes. Apparently I'm a 50R for the jacket and a 36/18 for the shirts. It was not cheap
