With the FinFet cards out I figure there should a good selection of 28nm cards on the used market now.

Of these used cards, which model do you think offers the best performance per dollar on average?

Completely depends on where you are buying, new, used, warranty, and price.

The Fury Nitro's selling off Amazon / Newegg new for ~$300 have been amazing deals. Some 980 TI's have been down in the 400s iirc. But basically its a real crabshoot especially if you are considering used as those prices are all over the place.

I've seen 980 TI's for $350 and 970's for $175 on hardforum and here as well. Supposedly there was going to be a mass influx of R9 290/290x/390/390x because of miners snatching up 480's and selling their old cards, but that hasn't happened. If used 980's are going for $200 or less when I build my new rig, I'm going to snag one of those to tide me over until 2nd generation finfet cards roll out. OC'd, they trounce OC'd 480's and beat 1060's most of the time too.

390's / 290's are still profitable for mining. That's probably why you haven't seen a huge dump of them.

A 970 for under $200 sounds decent but then you can snag a 470 for around the same price...

Including shipping, on eBay, I'd say:

980ti - $300-$350
980 / 390x - $200-$250
290x - $150 - $200

If you can pick up one of those cards in those price ranges, you're doing ok. Really, the new finfet you MSRP sets the upper bounds of what you should be paying for the performance. The cards above are only a good deal with regard to the inflated prices of the current gen 16/14nm cards.

/r/HardwareSwap has used Ti's up daily for $290-350. A range of AIB cards. That's the deal right now. It'll beat out any card at that price point.

EVGA B-stock 980 Ti were the deal a couple days ago. Classifieds, SCs, and ACXs going for $320 shipped with a one year warranty. Tuff to justify buying an AMD card right now at any price above $250 IMO. Even tuff to justify buying a 1060.

The Ti for $300 seems like a better deal pound for pound than the 1070 for $450. Then again, Nvidia seems apt to abandon previous tier products to devote all of their efforts for only their current line, which could be a potential down side. If I was not limited by my i5 2500 I may have tried to spring in the extra fifty bucks and pass on the 1060 I settled on.

980 ti still have enough muscle for at least 1 more year. even after nv stop including it in their game ready drivers. for 300$ it is worth it. especially when you compare it to the same price 1060. it is like 30-50% faster for the same money.

a super no brainer.

Debian's on price range, but used 7970/280x cards for $100 or less are hard to beat for the budget gamer. 3GB, latest DX12 games support, and still improving performance.

So, would it even be worth upgrading from some 7950 3GB cards, if that's what I already have?

Was looking at GTX1060 (MSI Gaming X 6GB) for $290, and RX 460 (Gigabyte WindForce 4GB OC) for $135.

Those are two totally different class of cards. Without looking up exact numbers, the RX 460 is probably slower, while the GTX 1060 is probably 75% faster.

I'm glad I picked up my 280x several months back for $100 bucks.

As others have said, 980ti if you can spend anywhere close to $300. The vast majority will do 1400+ with ease, and at that clock speed it is well placed in between stock 1070 and 1080.

R9 290/390 still starting at $215 shipped on ebay buy it now auctions. (Although with that mentioned, there is a used R9 290X 4GB for $204 shipped)

A 160$ gtx970. when overclocked turns into a gtx980
A 200$ gtx980 when overclocked is only 9% slower than a gtx980ti @ 1080p

these are great buys. and I've seen these prices used.

there is a 1070 for 320$, that's a great deal too.

Hawaii based cards still have a great value... in DX12 they have also much better performance than same gen. rivals

A 280X in a good condition going for 70-90 USD would be a killer bargain. If you want something a bit better, a 290/290X for 120 USD or so would also be exceptional.

R9 290's going for £100 for decent AIB versions are nice, the GTX 970 can be had for around £130 although I'd prefer the R9 290 as it's cheaper/4GB instead of 3.5GB and has driver updates. I've also seen some HD 7970s go for £60 or R9 280x for £70. I'm always looking for the latest but if I didn't like 1440p/144hz I would be more than happy with a 970/290.

Public landfills. I was dumping some junk on Saturday and saw some cases in the "office crap" area and looked them over. One looked like a fairly new Dell, so after a quick inspection I scooped it up and put it in the trunk of my car. (I'm not sure if it was actually legal, but I did it anyway.) What was in it? A fried X79 mobo and 650W PSU... but what works perfectly is the: 32GB of RAM, Intel 10Gb NIC, 4930k CPU, and Quadro M5000 (the 8GB GM204 card). Obviously it's a dump after an insurance claim over a surge of some kind, all the drives were gone, including the cage. So I bought a new-ish Asus P9X79 off ebay (the board I tested everything on has 2 bad memory channels), dug out a spare 600W Seasonic PSU, and I'm going to put it back to work.

Moral: Don't be proud, dig through the trash and see what you can find.

I want to say used Maxwell; but the lack of async compute is going to kill those cards in newer games. I can't even say Hawaii based cards because they're still pricey. At this point, the newer mid range 14nm cards are better options.

Async compute won't be much of a factor through this current generation, as far as major and indie titles are concerned. They have to account for the 100s of millions of Keplers, Maxwells, and even APUs in the installed base. It'll matter for benchmarks, but that's more of an epeen thing. I'm still rocking SLI 980TI Lightnings @1500MHz, and they have no problem with keeping up with SLI 1080s, for half the price.
