I run all the storage, networking, and compute for an HD editing environment that puts two different sports networks on the air. Roughly 85 Premiere seats all with access to 4PB high res storage and 600k hours of robotic archive along with supporting applications and infrastructure.

I work TV hours roughly 10a-7p, typically work 40-45 hours a week with occasional out of normal hours support.

Greater NYC area, with an exceedingly reasonable 15 minute commute.

PhD student, biochemistry. I study enzymology. My times aren't remotely set in stone, and I can start anywhere from 6AM to 12PM, and end anywhere from 5PM to the following morning/afternoon. 30 minute commute. I wake up 2 hours prior to when I want to be at work. $20,000/yr.
What do you plan to do after school?

No. PhD students in sciences get paid as research assistants. You basically only take classes your first year, then the subsequent years are spent slaving away in a lab, working more than full time for peanuts

seriously? is this a US thing? that is ez pez degree (no degree is easy). You study for the 1st year then you work for 2-3 years slaving in a lab? I rather take that route. Doing assignments and seminars made my eyes bleed.

Just transitioned out of a sr. electronics technician role to a supplier quality engineer title within the same company. I usually come in between 6a - 9a and work a 8hr day. Standard 40hr M-F work weeks. Been in a manufacturing environment for the past 17yrs. With the last raise, i'm making 20k more vs when I was 1st hired by the company.

No. It's common in the UK for PhD students to receive a stipend (around £14k pa). This would be provided by the research council funding your research. If your research is funded from a different source, then a stipend may be lower or not available.

Remember that a PhD is a higher degree - you need a first degree (preferably with first class honours) before you can apply for a PhD.

It's pretty common for engineering and science grad students. For my PhD EE I worked as a researcher for several different teams, in return their grants paid my tuition plus 24k yearly stipend. I don't think I knew any peers who paid out of pocket.

Easy? Hardly. The pay sucks and the hours suck. There were many weeks in my PhD where I was working 6-7 days/week and over 60 hours. And on average, it takes ~5-6 years in the US. And then you have the periods of utter frustration when you hit a wall in your project...

In many other countries, you start a PhD with a Masters degree, so there are no classes to take, just dissertation research under an adviser (usually ~4 years). In the US, the classes are built into the PhD program, so many people just start with a BS. Effectively, the length from BS to PhD is the same.

And if your adviser doesn't have money to pay you as a research assistant, you often have to teach on top of doing your research. Thankfully, I never had to contend with that situation.

Edit:
And though research can be very frustrating, I find it to be quite intellectually stimulating and challenging. So knowing I was getting a degree out of it sort of helped. But I think PhD students in the sciences are getting a bit screwed over financially.
