Talk to neighbors.

I live in a relatively poor neighborhood but I don't think property crime is big here.

I don't feel my risk is high but other factors that could deter are a dog that barks at anything that moves (I take him for walks so any neighbor knows he is nice at close range) and there is almost always at least one car parked in front.

Heavily armed, have dogs, secluded property in northern idaho. No crime happens here anyway in this small town....

We have a Jack Russel home security system. If you're willing to put up with a few false alarms, there is nothing better than a hyperactive, nervous little dog for home security.

Crime rate is pretty low, several times below the national median average. But anything can happen and I often work odd shifts including nights. It's a new subdivision, so don't really know many neighbors. Building houses on both sides of us currently. So we've got AT&T for home security. Downstairs window and door sensors, motion detection inside downstairs, auto locking deadbolt, outside camera with views of front door, driveway, and road. We can view it on phones or tv. We're a firearm friendly home as well.

It's made me lazy though, as I can change either thermostat temps on phone. Turn on lights too. I've been on the couch or in bed, logged in and changed the temp upstairs or down. Instead of just getting up. Overall pretty standard stuff, we're happy with it.

Keep my doors locked at all times (unless I'm making multiple trips hauling grocery bags in or something), plus guns. I live in a pretty mellow area though. It's not like there's no crime (ex: there's still a missing young lady that disappeared a few months ago from a neighboring city, prob foul play) but it ain't no ghetto or anything.

Dogs, cameras, wife works at home. In Baltimore even the rich neighborhoods border ghettos. There is no getting around it and still live in the city. It goes ghetto/rich people/getto/rich people all within a half mile radius. You will be hard pressed to live in Bmore without mixing with the commoners no matter how much money you have.

So even in the good neighborhoods there are dogs, cameras, neighborhood watches, community message boards, guns, alarms, etc.

The differences in crime in the different neighborhoods are not how much money there is, but how well the neighbors stick together. There are some ghettos here where the drug dealers and predators are not welcome and the people live in peace. There are rich neighborhoods where everyone fends for themselves and have a lot of problems.

Damn, the rich people must hate it when you have to cross through their territory to visit your peeps.

I live in the one of the 'safest' cities in TX but based on the bad stuff that happens out there, I would rather be as pro active as possible in protecting my home...

Have a eight 1080p security cams outside, monitored alarm, dusk to dawn LED lights over the garage (rear), porch entry (front), side door, reinforced the front/side doors to make kicking the door down significantly more difficult (this is probably the easiest and cheapest thing you can do to improve home security as kicking in the door is the easiest/fastest way for someone to gain entry - pretty scary that there is only a 1" strip of wood in the door jamb between the lock bolt and the inside of most homes to keep thieves out that probably has a strike plate with only 1" screws). Also have a few handguns and Mossberg 500...

This is what i have on my front/side doors:

My master bedroom lights and home thermostat are now controlled by Skynet, ...ooppps I mean Alexa....no need to even whip out the phone to change temp or turn off lights....all voice commands now...

And who will pull their triggers when you are not at home?

It's a Glock. Pulling the trigger is like removing the pin on a grenade or arming a Claymore.

... and he has 9 of them.

I use Foscam. The driveway is an outdoor version. The front and back are indoor cams used outdoor. They are up under the eaves so they are protected from rain. The hardest thing is keeping the birds off them.

I have 1 Foscam too. Their Android app sucks. How do you view/store the footage? I used to have it set up on my NAS but I'd like to have motion alarms go straight to my phone.

The android app is more just a live viewer. As for motion recording, I haven't been able to get that to work with the stock application that comes with it on Windows. The best I've been able to do is motion-detect pics and email send-outs. Supposedly you could use Blue Iris too (the demo worked), but I haven't had to urge to pay for software in a while.

General question for anyone who has indoor cameras pointed outside. For night vision, is it true that reflects off the glass and renders it useless (no visibility)?

I live in an urban area with no security cameras, a regular door, and you make me feel happy that I can live in my apartment with none of the above and still feel safe. God bless liberal urban America.

Video is pushed to my Synology where it is stored and I can then access it from my phone. You can't stream recorded video from the camera to your phone even if you have an SD card installed in it. The firmware in the camera won't allow for it. It's not an app issue, it's a camera issue.

Foscam has their cloud service. There is a cost for it so I have not investigated the functionality aspects of it. You may want to though.

We just sold our house and I watched all the showings in real time from my phone. As soon as I got a motion based email alert I would open the app to watch. I could have listened but didn't. I also had to resist the urge to pan the camera. It's funny that the camera is sitting on the mantle and nobody even took notice of it.
