I live in an urban area with no security cameras, a regular door, and you make me feel happy that I can live in my apartment with none of the above and still feel safe. God bless liberal urban America.
If your local media chose to publish it, I'm certain you'd be aghast at the crime that is occurring in your area. I laugh when people make mention of what happens in Florida not realizing that it's a state with sunshine laws that dictate that the information regarding criminal behavior be made public.

Crime is everywhere mainly because the drug problems in the nation run from east to west and north to south.

I live in the one of the 'safest' cities in TX but based on the bad stuff that happens out there, I would rather be as pro active as possible in protecting my home...

Have a eight 1080p security cams outside, monitored alarm, dusk to dawn LED lights over the garage (rear), porch entry (front), side door, reinforced the front/side doors to make kicking the door down significantly more difficult (this is probably the easiest and cheapest thing you can do to improve home security as kicking in the door is the easiest/fastest way for someone to gain entry - pretty scary that there is only a 1" strip of wood in the door jamb between the lock bolt and the inside of most homes to keep thieves out that probably has a strike plate with only 1" screws). Also have a few handguns and Mossberg 500...

This is what i have on my front/side doors:

Thanks for the link. I've been wondering about a simple reinforcement for the weak-ass door jamb.

lol Not. Just our county sheriff has over 70K calls/year, from loud music to murders. That does not include any of the local departments. 140K peeps in the county and 35K in my city.

I live in a sketchy suburb in the twin cities. It isnt terrible but it is getting worse. Every summer burglars work their way down a main road until they move on or get caught. Even had a dead body found in a ditch a few years ago. Low income rental complexes are a nice source of crime. Anyways, at the moment our aging Olde English Bulldog has done a good job. Anything odd happens and he is in the front window barking away looking mean. But I have no clue if he would attack or lick an intruder to death. Will be installing cameras this spring. Will store feeds locally and sync up to Amazon Drive in case burglars get smart and steal\destroy the storage. I also keep my 1911 in our bedroom just in case.

First off, I no longer live in an area that is crime prone.

Sure, I also lock my doors, but that would only keep the honest people out.

If someone was dumb enough to break in while I was there, they are going to have a rifle pointed at them pretty quickly.

I'm not sure I can count on my cats to help, though. One of them always runs into the basement when we have company over, and the other either tries to run outside or run up and mark the visitor to show them who is in charge.

I lock the doors and have an active alarm system (two yappy Chihuahuas that go nuts any time anyone even steps on the porch). That's about it..

Lock and key and camera. Just installed the Samsung camera with Smartcam app. Love it. It can send me a text each time any movement happens in a particular zone of the house (and you could pin point the zone in the camera). Plus I can log in from my phone and look at the house live and I can send alarm noise/police siren or talk (as in walkie talkie) and I can save the video on my phone. All free and no monthly fee. No need for any alarm company.

I think I will get a few more.

I just log on and all are quiet in the home front.

Damn, the rich people must hate it when you have to cross through their territory to visit your peeps.

Yes it means that even the wealthy and the working class neighborhoods here have to be tolerant of poors and other cultures and also be willing to put up with a certain amount of petty annoyances (car break-ins, graffiti, etc). Nobody lives in a bubble here.

You just have to love people who think bad stuff will always happen to someone else and will never happen to them....home invasions are increasing (at least it seems there are more news stories about them)...

So on the slight chance that you do become the victim of home robbery, will you do anything different after it happens???

I remember when I got my cameras installed, a few people asked me if I had been robbed...It is almost like you have something bad happen before you take action...

Well I grew up in Queens and there's no way you'd leave doors unlocked. I'm not sure what you meant by liberal urban = safe.

We don't leave doors unlocked here. We don't get robbed either. We have a top lock and a bottom lock. The bottom lock is always locked behind us. We never use the top lock. It's been years and not an incident.

I lock my door all the time unless I'm planing to go out, it's just a habit so I don't need to second guess if I locked the door, while I'm lying in bed. I know that I did it. Home invasions here are super rare though, but they do happen. Sadly crime has been going up quite a bit here even for a small city. There was a murder a few years ago, and a couple stabbings before that. Still not as much as big cities though that probably get more crime in one day than we get in a year.

I live in a safe state, but this oxy epidemic has created a lot of desperate burglars. I lock up, keep lights on, but I know for the serious criminal those won't help much. My closest neighbor is disabled and always home, keeps an eye on the place when I'm not around.

Apart from living 'off the beaten path,' there is a 125lb Anatolian on guard/nanny duty, and a 12 gauge with #4 buck for those not dissuaded.

I have 1 Foscam too. Their Android app sucks. How do you view/store the footage? I used to have it set up on my NAS but I'd like to have motion alarms go straight to my phone.

I am retired. I view the recordings on the PC that records them. I use an app called For Foscam on my Android. Shows realtime view just fine.

Video is pushed to my Synology where it is stored and I can then access it from my phone. You can't stream recorded video from the camera to your phone even if you have an SD card installed in it. The firmware in the camera won't allow for it. It's not an app issue, it's a camera issue

I have to disagree. My Foscams are iP cams. They support web access. You have to have a fixed WAN i/p or use a dynamic service that keeps a URL pointed to your WAN address if it changes. You also have to forward ports in your router.

Mine can be viewed here in a browser. http://www.ibmjunkman.com/cams/camallweb.htm

Yikes, I would not forward ports directly to cameras or PVR. You should setup a VPN server instead to access the main PVR. The cameras themselves should be on a separate vlan that only has access to the PVR and only accessible from the PVR.
