Like, are alarm systems any good or are there too many false positives? Camera + DVR? Weapons? Etc.

I use Frontpoint Security for my alarm system. If that doesn't make them pick a different house there is a South African Mastiff and a Great Dane waiting on them inside. While they are tangled up with them I have my own tools of various lethality to finish the job if need be. Also complete coverage of the exterior of the home with a set of IP cameras.

I've many a burglar say the best thing to have is a dog, even a small noisy one. Unless you are very wealthy and you home if of particular importance to break into the whole idea is to make your neighbors a more inviting target that you. I have worries due to my day job so cover my bases as much as I can.

Well, I've been trying to catch the worlds nastiest tomcat, but he's too smart for a trap.
However, keeping a bit of food out front means he's never too far away, and that seems to be good enough.

No security other than a door and my wit.

I have nothing of any real value and probably wouldn't replace most of what might get stolen except for the bicycles.

If you don't mind a little poop and carnage a grizzly bear in your house will work.

Around my neighborhood I cultivate an image of myself as a violent psychopath who is not worth fucking with.

Nothing but a 60lb lab/pit mix. Who barks at people in the hallway making noise if I'm home. If I'm not home he doesn't bark unless the buzzer/bell goes off. He's just trying to protect me when I'm around, which is cute. But would do nothing if someone wasn't home. Live in an urban area but very low crime, I'm not concerned.

So very much this. I have a German Shephard Dog that will dissuade all but the craziest of thieves but even simple stuff like believable but fake cameras on the exterior and motion activated lights make your house less appealing than your neighbors.

A combination of the above. My house needs painted. I sometimes lock the front door. I have 4 dogs. The 3 fifty pound dogs will come up and demand being pet until the burglar gets tired of it. The 8 pound guy thinks he will be a mean SOB, but as soon as you look at him he runs away.
